Plymouth is a small town in southwestern Indiana. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Posey County. The first settler in Plymouth was David Cook in 1812. The town was named for the English city of Plymouth, England. Plymouth was platted on November 15, 1827 by James C. Weller and others under the name of Wellerstown; it became Posey County's capital on January 3, 1830 when all of Posey County (except Vandalia) joined with Hancock to form Indiana Territory. On October 10, 1851, a tornado touched down in Plymouth and killed nine people and injured fifty-six others; this event is also known as the "Great Chicago Fire". The first school in Plymouth was built there in 1829. A new school building burned down on December 5th, 1889 but another one soon replaced it with a Carnegie library which still stands today across from the old courthouse square. In 1906, Portsmouth Avenue was renamed after Commodore George Halsey who fought during World War I at Belleau Wood near Fort Wayne and later served as Commandant General of Harbor Defenses Fleetwood Park Naval Base before being placed into retirement at age eighty-one years old; Halsey's home still stands today next to Portsmouth Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets NE in downtown Plymouth just south of Veterans Memorial Park where he spent his final days before passing away on October 25th aged ninety-eight years old surrounded by family members including five children born to his wife Julia who preceded him in death that day at age ninety-seven years old according to surviving siblings).
