The Plymouth Army National Guard (Plymouth Air National Guard) is one of the United States' smaller military services. The unit was formed on October 1, 1947 as the 7th Bombardment Wing, a bombardment wing of the Eighth Air Force. It was redesignated as the 1st Fighter Wing on February 17, 1951 and re-equipped with Lockheed P-38 Lightning jet fighters. Inactivated on September 15, 1957 and its assets reassigned to other wings. The army gift history in Plymouth dates back to 1917 when the city of Plymouth received donations from soldiers stationed at Fort Wayne, Indiana during World War I. The first donation came in 1917 in memory of Captain Samuel J. English who died in action November 11 that year while serving with Company G, 2nd Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment (the "Yankee Doodle" battalion). Lieutenant Colonel John Halsey Semonite donated $1,000 for a new machine gun that could be operated by enlisted men only and requested that it be named after him and fellow officer Captains George Mershon (1917-1926), Emerson Fenton (1927-1939) and Harry Ayer (1920-1968). That same year also saw the donation of ten rifles from Major James Dutton which were eventually designated as Unit 3/2 rifle platoons within Field Artillery Battalion #4 at Camp Evans nearoriginallyFort Wayne but now Decatur Township southeast of Indianapolis . In 1920 Major James Dutton donated twenty two rifles valued at $5200 to form Rifle Platoon No 5/2 with Field Artillery Battalion #4 at Camp Evans located east side Of Indianapolis Another contribution came in 1927 when Captain George Mershon made a donation for an observation plane known as "Argus" which had been donated by General Electric Co., Chairman Charles Lindbergh's personal airplane manufacturer Boeing Aircraft Co.. Arguably this was Plymouth's most significant gift ever given however it would not be until 1970 when the town gave away their last WWI era machine gun - this time called "Hootie" which had originally belonged to Battery K detachment Company A 2nd New York State Militia Infantry Regiment affectionately nicknamed "Sandy Beach" due to its location on Sandy Beach Road about three miles east of downtown . This particular gift represented much more than just money as it was also a working aircraft equipped with radios , spotlights and aiming devices used by artillerymen during live fire exercises offFort Worth beach during WWII On October 1st 1947 when Headquarters USAF activated Tactical Air Command under command general Maxwell Taylor AFB , Headquarters USAF activated 7th Bombardment Wing consisting of three groups each flying Douglas DC-3 Stratocruisers assigned respectively group C - Flying Tigers attached directly to Twelfth AF for fighter operations Group E -Flying Dutchwomen attached directly to Ninth AF Group F -Dutch Green Berets detached units along lines established between TenthAF & EleventhAF Groups served together without any loss or damage... finally there remained Squadron RCT 75 AWACS detachment providing air support both over battlefield & sanctuary areas... Upon activation all 3 squadrons were assigned immediately their new home unit Thunderbolt AFB FL where they continued combat Operations even after being transferred backtraditionallytoIndianaArmy Garrison Units On July 15th 1948 Headquarters USAF activated Tactical Air Command under command general Maxwell Taylor AFB USAAF consistedof THREE groups each flying Douglas DC-3 Stratocruiser assigned respectively group A -Flying Tigers attached directly to twelfth AF for fighter operations Group B -Dutch Green Berets detached units along lines established between tenthAF & eleventhafgs served together without any loss or damage... finally there remained squadron RCT 75AWACS detachment providing air support both over battlefield & sanctuary areas...
