The history of the United States Air Force gift shop is long and complicated. The military has been buying items from the Plymouth store since it opened in October 1947. The first purchase was a .50 caliber machine gun, which was given to the RAF at RAF Fairford, England. It was returned to the United States after being used in World War II. This machine gun became one of the most popular gifts for air force members, and it continues to be given out today. Over time, different types of airplanes have been bought from the Plymouth store. In 1942, the United States Air Force was founded and it received its first donations of equipment from the Army. In 1945, the USAF bestowed upon the City of Plymouth an aircraft hangar for storage and use by military units stationed in the town. The city also donated two Spitfires as part of this gift. This was one of many military gifts given to Plymouth during World War II. Since World War II, there have been numerous contributions made by members of the USAF in Plymouth. Plymouth, Indiana is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis– Hammond-Van Buren Metropolitan Statistical Area. Plymouth was founded on December 3, 1814 by Captain John Denton and his crew of the USS "Constitution". The town was named for Plymouth in England. In 1824, Plymouth became the seat of Hendricks County. The first school in Plymouth was built on South High Street in 1826 by Mrs. Rachel Hovey and Mr. James Welch. A second school building was erected on North High Street in 1830 by Mrs. Mollie King and Mr. James Welch again. A third school building was erected on WestHigh Street in 1836 by Captaine John Denton himself and Revdswilliam Browning (a Presbyterian missionary). A fourth school building was also erected on WestHigh Street but it burned down in 1840 while being used as a jailhouse In 1854, Reverend Jno Cairns started teaching classes at what is now known as White Memorial Institute which later became Plymouth Community College In 1907, after residents had petitioned for it they elected their first mayor Harry Sennett with 71% of the vote . On October 24th 1909 Plymouth's incorporation as a municipality occurred when all citizens voted to ratify it . On December 16th 1912 Mayor Sennett passed an ordinance creating a new courthouse to be located at 222 E Main Streets which served as both our municipal hall and court house until 1951 when that structure burned down . Plymouth is a city in and the county seat of Plymouth County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 935 residents. The city is located on the east bank of the St. Joseph River, about south of Indianapolis and east of Michigan City. Plymouth was founded in 1812 as a small fur trading post by English settlers Captain John Smith and his crew on the first European attempt to cross the river from Canada. The following year, Plymouth became part of newly organized Indiana Territory when it was granted to that state by U.S. President James K. Polk. In 1827, during Indian Removal policies pursued by General Anthony Wayne, many Native Americans were removed from their lands in present-day Indiana to make way for white settlers. Among those forcibly moved were most of Plymouth's original African American citizens who had been living there since before its founding as an Anglo-Indian community known as "The Landing". During its early years as a village/township (1812–27), Plymouth was home to a number of pioneer families such as Captains John Smith and William Graves; Samuel Morse; Isaac Niles; Ezekiel Gould; Elijah Whitehead; Nathaniel Cummings; Peter Palmer (1772–1857); Solomon Porter (1789–1860); Ebenezer Poor (1793–1868); Jonathan Gist (1800–1859) and others who made important contributions to early westernIndiana development including: Colfax Paper Mills Company founders George Armstrong Custer and David Rice Custer at Fort Dearborn in 1846; Phelps Dodge Corporation founder Hiram Sanklin's first territorial office at what is now North Main Street in 1889 – here he served until his death in 1907 In 1830, voters approved incorporation as a town under then-Director Amos Davenport's plan which called for township boundaries to be drawn near where water crossings would later be built for steamboats carrying passengers across the St Joe River – much like today's Plymouth Township limits are defined by Interstate 40 northbound motorists traveling westward from Indianapolis while southbound drivers travel along I-465 southward towards Michigan City
