Plainfield is a small town in the Eastern Indiana county seat of Porter. The population was 7,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village is located on the eastern bank of the White River, about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of downtown Indianapolis and 8 miles (12 km) south of Dearborn Heights. The first European settlers in what became Plainfield were French colonists who arrived in 1693. A sawmill and grist mill were built in 1798 by Nicholas Deshler and his brother-in-law George Hendrickson. In 1806, John Smeaton purchased land from Nicholas Deshler for £200. He organized a store, post office, and school as an outpost of civilization on the frontier between Indiana Territory and Kentucky Territory. By 1830, there were three stores in Plainfield: one operated by Smeaton himself, another by his son Isaac Smeaton, and another by Elisha Holmes Sr., which produced flour for local markets throughout Northeast Ohio. From 1828 to 1840 Plainfield had its own jail with cells for 100 prisoners; however it was moved to nearby Terre Haute when that community's jail construction began in 1837. In 1837, residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Plainfield." On November 3 that year they elected David Buell as their first mayor. When Buell resigned from office on May 1st after being indicted on charges including bribery and conspiracy against Indian traders during the Black Hawk War (1838), trustees appointed James Jarrell to fill his vacancy until a new mayor could be chosen within 60 days or else he would beitutionally disqualified from service forevermore - an event which never happened because Jarrell served two terms without interruption before dying suddenly on October 5th at age 50 while visiting family members near home). The Village Turnpike Authority was formed in 1947 to improve communication among villages within Harrison Township along Interstate 65; this highway ran through Plainfields center; however it was closed down due to budget cuts shortly after its inception due to concerns over potential traffic congestion caused by increased population density along I-65 outside Loop 401 exit 9A/9B close to all major shopping centers adjacent thereto - something that did not happen because Harrison Township adopted a resolution impeding development within its borders). Today’s economy increasingly relies upon services provided by large corporations such as Sears Roebuck & Co./ Kmart Inc./ Lowe’s Home Improvement Company/ Ford Motor Co./ PepsiCo., Mastercard Inc., IBM Corporation/, Lucasfilm Ltd., Walt Disney Company/, Kroger Supermarkets /McDonalds restaurants/. Manufacturing has declined since 2000 with many businesses moving out into larger facilities located just outside metropolitan Indianapolis or Gary Indiana; however there are still some remnants left such as Anheuser-Busch InBev/MillerCoors Brewing starring at Job Corps Training Center next door housing numerous manufacturing jobs providing training for young adults interested in careers in various fields such as engineering/ carpentry etc...Due primarily to increasing healthcare costs associated with everything from Obamacare premiums right up through Medicare taxespaying citizens now faces significant financial challenges especially given high gas prices across much of America many people have started looking for waysto reduce expenses despite having ample warning about what was coming... plainFIELD has taken steps towards becoming more “Green” recent efforts include installation of solar panels(lighting) atop several buildings utilizing wind power generated from turbines situated just northwest Of town off Old Route 20)...
