Plainfield is a town in Clay County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Plainfield comes from two plaine fields that were once in the town's boundaries. The first settler in Plainfield was George Hillyer in 1830. By 1835, most of what would become Plainfield had been founded and by 1840 it contained just 10 people. In 1847, a post office was established at Plainfield and by 1850 it had grown to over 100 residents. One of the first businesses in Plainfield was a grocery store operated by Solomon Kappes and his son Charles Kappes on State Street nearpresent day First Avenue and Cicero Road. In 1854, John Eaton opened an Opera House on Main Street which became one of the leading venues for entertainment in early twentieth century Indiana. In 1859, Michael Calkins built a sawmill on what is now Long Ave NW which began producing goods for local farmers and traders soon after. By 1861, there were also three frame churches located within the limits of what would later become Plainfield: St John’s Episcopal (founded 1802), Reformed Dutch Church (1827), and Methodist Episcopal Church (1868). One of Illinois' earliest settlers to reach central Indiana via stagecoach discovered new land west of present-day PlainFIELD when he stopped at Vincennes on his way south from Council Bluffs on July 12th, 1845 while travelling through Clay County with General Harrison's army returning home from Mexico City following their successful invasion that year; this man known as George Stephenson identified further land eastward extending into Cass County as "Plain Field" whereupon he named his discovery for its resemblance to Fields Cathedral or "Plainville" situated near Vincennes giving rise to our current spelling - " plain field ". Plainfield is a town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located in the Southeastern corner of the state and on the eastern edge of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The population was 30,856 at the 2010 census. The name "plain" is derived from English words "plain" and "fields", which are what originally populated this area. The first European to visit Plainfield was Pieter van der Weyden in 1665, who named it New Netherland after his home country of Holland. The first settlers arrived in 1786, primarily from Pennsylvania but also from Maryland and Virginia. In 1812, General James Knoppers sent a force against numerically superior Native Americans near what is now Plainfield Township; however, he failed to take any prisoners or loot their village as he intended because most of his forces had been withdrawn before reaching there. After an absence of more than two years due to illness, back-to-back Indian Wars led by Major Andrew Jackson began with severe losses for both sides; however, when Knoppers returned to action on November 4, 1814 with 1,500 men and three cannonboats (the largest body ever brought into American history), he routed many of the Indians at Cacapon River Bridge while they were fleeing downstreamabandledoes capsized as they crossed over – one such event that helped make America's Second war for independence possible. As a result of these events and others throughout its history including during World War II when Plainfield became an airbase for allied planes flying missions over Germany (notably Operation Grapeseed) as well as during Hurricane Floyd in 1999 which caused extensive damage to much of central Indiana – plainfield has come to be known nationally for its military significance.
