Plainfield is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in this area were the Kincaids who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1811. They built a log cabin on the current site of Main Street and named it after their small village in that state, Plainfield township. A post office was established in 1819 and remained open until 1906. The Village of Plainfield was organized as a town on November 3, 1912 by an act of the State legislature. The original plat for the new town had 10 lots with a total value of $3,500 each. The townsite was located on what is now North High Street and East Hanna Avenue between Elm and Oak Streets. On July 14, 1925, Plainfield became part of the newly created city of Fort Wayne when that city merged with other cities within the Indianapolis metropolitan area. At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), Fort Wayne's population was over 350,000 people; however, due to various wartime factors including air raids and war-time blockades (the Korean War being particularly harsh), Fort Wayne's population decreased to 150,000 by 1960; however, it has since grown back to over 200,000 people as a result of industrial development – most notably in downtown Fort Wayne which has seen rapid growth in recent decades due to heavy investment by private businesses and developers. In addition to its role as an economic engine for northeastern Indiana – responsible for generating more than $4 billion worth of economic activity annually –Fort Wayne also plays host to many important cultural events throughout the year including ArtPrize®, Indianapolis Motor Speedway® weekend racing events (including Brickyard 400™) and numerous world championship meetings/events such as The Open Championship golf tournament held at Lucas Oil Stadium every year since 1954). Plainfield is a city in and the county seat of Hardin County, Indiana, United States. The population was 72,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1836 by Col. George Rogers Clark as a small village on the west bank of the White River from which it derived its name. In 1839, Plainfield became incorporated as a town and has since grown to become one of the largest cities in Indiana with over 100,000 residents. Its economy depends largely on agriculture and manufacturing such as chemicals, plastics and textiles. The first European settlement in what is now Hardin County was by Captain John Byers who landed his ship "John Adams" on July 25, 1795 at what is now known as Arkansas Landing on Una Creek near where present-day Notre Dame University stands today. He named this location Prairie du Chien because he thought it would be a good place for farming indians to summer their crops while they built up their supplies and awaited news from England that they might be able to purchase land there instead of being forced off Indian reservations. The first white settler in what is now Hardin County was David Dixon who arrived about 1800 from Maryland along with his family under the leadership of Captains Daniel Boone and Ethan Allen. Dixon obtained title to 640 acres (2 hectares) east of present-day Indianapolis on December 1, 1806 from Wm Horseshoe Bend Township patent #1,632 granted to him by President James Kankakee after surveys were made therein by Major Christopher Laddington mapping out what would later become Hardin County according to original platters maps prepared by Peter Hagerman & others for Indiana Territory boundary survey #4 dated March 10th 1796 No known person ever claimed or exercised any right or interest within that area until 1836 when Col George Rogers Clark purchased all remaining lands including present dayHardin County from David Dixon thereby creating Plainfield Township which officially began operations January 2nd 1837 There are several theories concerning how Plainfield got its name - one suggests that Colonel George Rogers Clark heard somebody calling 'Plainfields' due to its similarity To an old English phrase 'A Field Without Peace'. Another account suggests that General Isaac Brock ordered LtCol Jonathan Edwards ('Ike') to rename all posts garrisoned along The Ohio River between Fort Wayne & Cincinnati - Edwards agreed and changed the name to Pvt Ross's Station after Maj Gen Ives Ross commander during US occupation Of Canada - thus giving rise to our current spelling although no evidence supports either theory
