Plainfield is a town in Dearborn County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in Plainfield were James and Anna Cook who arrived in 1814. They founded a small cabin on the bank of the Chicago River. In 1825, they moved to what is now Elmwood Avenue and built a larger house on what remains of their original cabin. In 1830, James Cook died and his widow Anna passed away without children so she bequeathed her land to her grandson John Cook of Elmwood Avenue. He sold it in 1851 to Jacob Hurd who farmed it for about fifty years until he sold it to George Wurts in 1912. In 1927, Drury's Drug Store opened its doors at corner of Elmwood Ave and Green Street which became one of the largest drugstores in America when it closed down in 1991. The store was converted into an apartment complex known as "The Gables". The Plainfield AME Zion Church was founded by Reverend Lewis Sibley on October 6th, 1881 with twelve members initialing membership rolls that Christmas season. The church has been active ever since with services being held every weeknight except for Mondays becauseSunday school is offered from morning until after church services have ended for that day’s kids (5-8pm). Reverend Sibley also served as President from 1907-1915 and again from 1928-1941; both terms were marked by great growth within the church despite several difficult times including prohibition (1892) during which Rev Jesse Jenson preached from beneath the viaduct on State Route 66 near present day Fordham University; World War I (1914) when many people lost their lives while serving our country; then finally Prohibition ( 1920 ) when Reverend Sibley organized new congregation outcasts into this denominational mix once again becoming pastor emeritus though still preaching weekly services starting right up again just prior toThanksgiving dinner! On July 4th 1916 PlainFIELD residents helped make history by becoming world’s first “green” community through setting up an Edgar Bronfman Beauty Supply Company located at 8191 N Main Street! With over 1/2 million items inventoried during business hours we are considered today as one of America’s leading beauty supply stores! It wasn't long before other businesses followed suit such as The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which moved into facility next door on November 10th 1926 making PlainFIELD home to one of America's most important tire retailers!
