Air Force deployed gift history in Plainfield, Indiana began in the early 1940s when the United StatesAAF activated its First Tactical Air Wing. The wing was made up of Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes and flew combat missions against Japan during World War II. In 1946, the AAFactivated First Tactical Airlift Wing which transported cargo and passengers between bases in Illinois and Indiana. The wing was disbanded in 1949 but reactivated in 1951 as part of the USAF Second Tactical Air Wing. This unit was responsible for airlift operations out of Hulen Field, Texas during the Korean War. The Second Tactical Airlift Wing became inactive again in 1960 but it was reactivated again under Third Tactical Air Wing command on 1 October 1963 as a subordinate unit of Ninth Air Force at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina. This unit provided airlift support to NATO forces operating in southeastern Europe during Operation Market Garden. On 1 May 1966 Ninth AFwas redesignated Fifth Air Force and moved from Seymour Johnson AFB to Ramstein AB, Germany where it assumed control over all USAAF assets located there including the F-111A/Bfighter jets used by the USAF European Command (EUC) . The Fifth AF operational units were: 1st Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 325th Bombardment Group; 2nd Bombardment Squadron (Hull), 326th Bombardment Group; 4th Fighter Squadron (F-4C/D), 447th Fighter Group; 5th Intelligence Squadron (IISS), 546th Intelligence Support Squadron; 611st Troop Carrier Squadron (HC-6M); 715th Troop Carrier Squadron (HC-130 Hercules). In 1968 Tenth Air Force activated at Ramstein AB with new mission - providing aerial refueling services to Allied troops fighting Vietnam while also providing logistical support to allied ground forces on both sides of that conflict. After Union General Oliver North took office as President of the United States following Abraham Lincoln's assassination, some residents began to fear that he would try to return slavery back into America while also implementing new legislation which would benefit slaveholders instead of laborers like themselves. As a result, they formed a coalition called "The Republican League" together with other nearby townships to fight North's policies head on and ultimately driving him from office in 1974. Since then, Plainfield has seen steady growth with both its population (which reached 10,000 by 2000) and economy (which has diversified into agricultural production). In recent years though there have been some controversies surrounding controversial issues like fracking which have impacted local businesses negatively but overall it has been an positive experience for all involved.

Plainfield is a town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the banks of the White River. The population was 10,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Plainfield, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Plainfield was Nicholas Sims from what is now Hampshire County, England in 1785. In 1814, Daniel Webster and his party surveyed and then named Plainfield after a small village in New York State that they had passed through on their way to survey and name Ripon township in Wisconsin Territory. On July 4, 1818, Webster wrote to his wife from what is now Delaware Township: "I am going over to see if I can get some land for my family hereabouts; but I should think it would be about two miles wide by one mile long." He also offered her $200 for her share of the tract which she accepted with pleasure. In 1826, Hosea Butler purchased 640 acres (248 ha) east of Indiana's capital city Indianapolis as part of an act to create Monroe Township (now Vigo Township). Butler donated this land to Plainfield Township under an agreement dated March 1, 1830 which stated: "That all good citizens are hereby invited and requested to join me in forming a town or village within said township... This town or village will be made up principally of white people who have adopted my principles and become associated with me materially." On November 3rd following year when voting began for members for plain field school district No 2 there were only 7 residents present out of a total population of 12 families! The school board meeting minutes recorded on December 5th show that 13 citizens votedYes on starting a primary school while 8 others abstained because they did not want their children included without parental consent! It wasn't until 1858 when voters elected George Washington Stephens as mayor making him the first African American mayor in America! The first post office opened in Plainfield on January 22nd 1859 with Wm Henson serving as mail carrier! By 1870 there were 324 residents living within PlainFIELD TOWNSHIP!!! By 1880 there were 960 residents living within plainFIELD TOWNSHIP!!! It wasn't until 1905 when citizens successfully petitioned government officials to change the name from "plain field" to "Terre Haute"
