During the 18th century, many German Protestants arrived in Peru and began trading goods with local natives. They brought along methods for growing sugarcane so they could produce refined cane sugar which they exported back to Germany. This new trade led to increased demand for maga coffee throughout Europe, resulting in its initial discovery in Peru! As per current estimates, there are over 2 million acres (890 km2) where maga coffee grows wild across all five regions where it occurs: Amazonas, Callao Basin (northwest), Huánuco Department (southwest), Loreto Department (southwest), and Tarija Department (northcentral). Additionally, plantations have been set up across these regions totaling nearly 45 thousand hectares (120 square miles)!
