The history of the Army in Peru, Indiana goes back to 1846 when the first military detachment was organized under the command of Brigadier General David D. Garrick. The United States Military Mission to Peru was created in 1847 and consisted of Colonel George Q. Smith, Lieutenant Colonel John F. Carlin, and Major Augustus C. Hanna as military observers to study Spanish activities in the area. On December 12, 1847, a gunboat filled with soldiers from Peru arrived at Ft Wayne for storage and were placed under the command of Captain Elisha Swayne. In 1850-1851 there was a troop movement from Lima to Fort Wayne resulting in an increase of by 1,000 men to 10 companies totaling 675 men. The Regiment became known as Company K (Peru Volunteers). In 1861-1862 there was a troop movement from Lima to Terre Haute resulting in an increase of by 2 companies totaling 24 men to 2 field batteries totaling 36 guns. These troops served on garrison duty at Ft Harrison until their departure for Mexico on July 8th 1862 where they engaged in skirmishes and battles against Mexican forces before finally reaching Veracruz on September 26th 1862 where they joined the rest of the army that had been deployed there pursuant to orders from Mexico City. On November 1st 1865, Company L (Indiana Volunteers) was organized at Lima with private William Hargrave as its first captain and included seven officers and 119 enlisted men who served until it disbanded on February 11th 1870 due to lack of material support from home country during the American Civil War which ended two months later without any combat between American forces and Mexican rebels across what is now southern Indiana/Michigan borderland

Peru, Indiana is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. Peru is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Peru goes back to 1827 when three men from Ohio founded the village of Peru on the banks of the Wabash River. The first post office was established in 1830 and it served as a stopover for stagecoaches travelling between Cincinnati and Indianapolis. In 1836, John Smedley built a gristmill and store in what is now Peru. By 1840, there were seven businesses in Peru with over $1,000 worth of merchandise sold each month. In 1847, an act was passed by Congress which allocated land to form Johnson County along with Miami Township and present-day Lafayette Township (the township's line then stretched half way down the Wabash River). This made it possible for farmers to purchase land that had been scattered throughout Johnson County. The first courthouse was built on Court House Road in 1850 and remained standing until 1958 when it burned down. In 1865, Perry native Hosea Stevens opened a grocery store near where he now resides called The Hermitage Store & Grocery Company before moving to his current location in Lima Avenue in 1922. In 1925 he donated land across from his store to become Perry High School which still stands today as one of Johnson County's most popular schools! In 1924-25 there was an attempt by two businessmen - J P Walsh & Frank Latham - to establish a grain elevator on the east bank of the Wabash River but this failed due to high water levels caused by heavy rains during that season’s Elkhart floods! A new elevator was finally erected by C B Scudder & Sons Ltd., operators of that company’s Grain Elevator No 3 at 501 Nacogdoches Street (now Canal Street) just east of downtown Lima after years of effort by local entrepreneur A G Scudder! It became operational on November 5th 1926 and handled 6 million bushels annually! Johnson County experienced rapid growth following its establishment as an official county seat with charter membership arriving from Washington Territory on December 16th 1870!!! On January 2nd 1899 – less than one year after incorporation – citizens voted overwhelmingly not to secede from Johnson County because they felt their rights were already being fulfilled under existing government structures! One reason given for staying within Johnson COUNTY WAS THE HIGH POVERTY OF ITS CITIZENS!! also some say this reluctance may have been due to extenuating circumstances surrounding Presidential Executive Order No 8802 dated February 9th 1928 which revoked all legal status enjoyed by Peruvians residing within 10 miles (16 km) OF IOWA CITY!!!!
