The New Haven National Guard is a unit of the United States Army Reserve. The unit was first constituted on July 1, 1861, as the Indiana National Guardsman Regiment. The regiment was redesignated on October 14, 1864, as the 5th Brigade, Indiana National Guard. On February 15, 1865, it was organized as a brigade and assigned to the Western Division of General Ulysses S. Grant’s Union Expeditionary Force that invaded Missouri in 1863. The brigade eventually served in all three campaigns along the way and earned a reputation for its valor and effectiveness. The brigade returned to Indiana on September 4, 1865, and was disbanded on December 16th.
New Haven is a small town in the state of Indiana. It is located about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis and about 25 miles southwest of Chicago. The population was 11,500 at the 2000 census. New Haven is part of the Terre Haute, IN Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now New Haven arrived in 1811. They were led by Captain Elijah Porter and his wife Deborah Porter. The Potters also founded a school in 1813 which served as the primary educational facility for the community until it closed in 1960. The town was incorporated on February 14, 1847, and named after President George Washington's homestate of Virginia (New Haven had been mentioned as a possible site for the capital city during President James K. Polk's candidacy for office in 1846). The original plat map of New Haven shows that it consisted of just five blocks - two east and three west - with no buildings or other structures standing today except for some remains from earlier pioneer days still preserved on nearby farms. However, over time people began moving into what would become New Haven from surrounding villages, townships, and counties including Terre Haute, Vincennes, Lafayette County (later Lafayette Township), Peru Township (now Elkhart County), Gosnells Township (now Kendall County), Mount Prospect Village (now Gossanville), White River Settlement (later Westfield), Appleton Colony (later Aurora Colony), Waterbury Colony (later Hartford Colony) and several others until only a few isolated settlements remain today within present-day Ingersoll Township north of Wellesley Avenue in southeastern Elkhart County
