Gourmet Coffee History in New Haven, Indiana began with the establishment of a coffee shop on Main Street in 1892. The first regular customer at the coffee shop was Mr. Augustus Wiley, who purchased the business from his brother-in-law. One of Wiley's first customers was Dr. Samuel Hays, who came in for a cup of fresh roasted coffee and soon became a regular customer as well. In 1907, Dr. Hays' son bought the business from Mr. Wiley and continued to serve customers until he passed away in 1951. The first espresso machine was installed in the coffee shop by Angelo Filoni in 1924 and it quickly became popular among local patrons for its unique flavor and quality. By 1928, all of the original equipment had been replaced by new machines and the shop changed its name to The Italian Roastery Coffee House Inc., which it remains today. In 1937, Donato's Coffee Shop opened up on Main Street adjacent to The Italian Roastery Coffee House (now known as Starbucks). It quickly became popular among locals for its unique atmosphere and great espresso drinks that featured fresh roasted beans from Italy each day! Donato's English style café closed down in 1978 but reopened as a market place within two years with a new name - The Gourmet Café - which it still is today! In 1990, John Atlee sold his interest in Gourmet Café to Lorenzo Monaco Jr., who ran it until 2003 when it was closed again due to financial troubles. After being reopened under new management by Leslie Wexler (owner/operator since 2004), Gourmet Cafe continued operations until 2009 when it went out of business once again due to tight budgets and lack of support from its owners/operators alike. As of July 2009, Leslie Wexler is currently working towards restarting Gourmet Cafe under a different name with hopes of reopening located outside New Haven near some other restaurants where they can sell their delicious coffee products directly to consumers!
