New Haven, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 763 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of New Haven County and home to the University of Notre Dame. New Haven was founded in 1837 by Father John Cavanaugh and Brother Michael Jenssen as a small Catholic town on the west bank of the White River, about east of Indianapolis. The first permanent settler in New Haven was Peter Peebles, from Wisconsin, who arrived in 1838 and began trading with Native Americans near what is now known as downtown New Haven. In 1840, Peebles married Ann White and they raised six children there: four boys and two girls named Anna (1841-1914), John (1843-1925), Mary (1846-1920), Catherine (1849-1924) and Sophie (1851-1920). In 1845, New Haven became one of five townsland divisions within Hamilton Township; it remained that way until 1919 when it was merged into larger Newton Township. That year saw also its centennial—the first anniversary since incorporation—and $5,000 was allocated to commemorate the occasion by issuing certificates to citizens “for all good works done during that year” including planting 9 acres (3 hectares) of apple orchards and erecting a school building%. By 1870, most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Indiana or Illinois; but seven families retained their roots when Newton Township was created again in 1912 as an independent township; these were Mrs. Hapgood ($20 per acre [$740]), Mr. Bryant ($30 per acre [1,080], 3 years later), Mr. Gillespie ($35 per acre [1,200]), Mrs.—Mrs.—Galloway ($40 per acre [1,240]), Rev.—Rev., Dr.—Dr., Mrs.—Mrs.—Moore ($50/acre [2160]) & family physician Charles Wickershams ($60/acre [2400]). By 1920 there were 8 families living on an original 6 blocks square grid map area which would amount to just over 2 acres today! The first post office opened in 1847; it closed because no packages could be delivered due to high postage rates then prevailing throughout America! One resident recalled: "We used to go out every day at 5am collecting firewood for our homes... we would drive down through Tiptonville past all these beautiful homes where people were farming grandmas' eggs... We would get up early so we could have breakfast before going outcollecting wood." A new post office opened on November 17th 1918 after 16 years without occupants! One resident said back then "It only took about 10 minutes from my house at 4th Street corner US 20W to walk across town... I remember going doortodoor selling newspapers" . After World War II many refugees came streaming into New Haven looking for jobs or open spaces ahead so some semblance of civilization returned although some shops did close such as hardware store final closure in 1951 finally followed by furniture store same fate soon afterwards along with numerous auto parts stores shuttered over this period too
