The New Haven, Indiana Army Garrison was founded in 1872 as the garrison for Fort Wayne. It was renamed Fort Wayne Military District in 1916 and again in 1942 when it became the Third Army Garrison. The Third Army Garrison was disbanded in 1945 and its assets were merged into First Army Garrison. The First Army Garrison was activated on November 1, 1947 and named after General George Custer. It served as the basic military unit of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department until 2002 when it became a civilian police department under the command of the Indiana State Police. In 2006, First Army Garrison merged with Second Infantry Division to form the 8th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) which is headquartered at Ft. Wayne, IN. Army deployments have been a part of local history since before World War I when soldiers from nearby towns helped man artillery batteries during that war. For example, troops from Seymourtown manned an artillery battery on Lake Michigan Beach during World War I while Ft. Harrisonburg volunteers manned similar cannons along their shoreline near Dunkirk, KY during World War II. In 1917-1918 soldiers from Ft Steubenville manned an artillery battery on White Sands Missile Range while troops from Anderson barracks manned a battery at Cedar Rapids Naval Air Station during WWI; also Battery No 710 at Rock Island Arsenal between 1919-1920; Battery No 511 at Decatur Naval Air Station between 1921-1924; Battery # 141st Field Artillery Battalion stationed at Winchester Municipal Airport between 1925-1929; Battery # 955th Coast Artillery Regiment stationed at Marine Barracks Indianapolis between 1930-1932; Battery # 499th Field Artillery Battalion stationed at Evansville Municipal Airport 1933-1945). New Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Hendricks County. It was founded on November 3, 1795, by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his family as a small town on the banks of the Wabash River. The population was 21,715 at the 2010 census. New Haven has been called "the cradle of American democracy" and "the home of education." The city contains one of America's largest libraries, as well as multiple museums and art galleries. The first Europeans to visit what is now New Haven were French traders in 1614–1615 who landed on the Wabash River after sailing down from Illinois via the Great Lakes system. Father Jacques Marquette explored portions of present-day Indiana in 1679 while visiting France before returning to Canada with Olivier de Costeaux and other Jesuits in early 1681. Father Marquette named part of what is now Hendricks County for him, including much land that he did not explore further south because it had been ceded to England by France at the Treaty of Paris following its defeat in Europe's War for Independence (1763–1765). On October 12, 1795, General Anthony Wayne arrived at Fort Dearborn in what is today downtown Detroit with 2,500 soldiers and began construction on Fort Dearborn which would become one of America's most important military installations during its Revolutionary War era; it was also key to Wayne's strategic plan for controlling north-central Michigan Territory during this time period. On November 3rd, 1795 – four days after President George Washington became president – New Haven was founded when Nicholas-Jacques Conte came over from France with his family to homestead a square block near where Commercial Street now stands just eastsideof First Street extending into what is now North High School property (now North College Avenue)). In 1819, New Haven became an unscientific township due to its location along Indian Creek (Wabash River) which afforded easy access to raw materials necessary for industrial production within minutes' reach by wagon or boat; these include coal mined near Harlan Heights westward across Indian Creek Bridge until 1837 when transportation methods improved dramatically enough that coal mining ceased there permanently*. In 1871*( concurrent with Indianapolis becoming an incorporated city), New Haven annexed neighboring unincorporated parts of Hendricks County*(including present day White Sands Township) making it one large municipality*along with Centre Pointe *during this time period*. In 1902*( coinciding with enactment of State Statute No 14 - Incorporation Of Cities And Towns In Hendricks County*) New Haven adopted its current name – Hendersonville – reflecting growth outside the limits previously defined for it *. By 1907 Hendersonville had reached its current population size having annexations from parts of Decatur Township*, Greenfield Township*, Lawrence Township††††[and] Westfield Township‡‡‡ [*White Sands Township annexation took place effective February 1st 1906]. With continued growth come social changes faced by new inhabitants such as prohibitionppaided liquor sales being allowed starting January 1st 1911 followed by more single occupancy dwellings being built beginning April 1st 1912 (* Many remaining homes were destroyed during World War II). Additionally some industries moved outta town including Beech Aircraft Corporation moving their plant from White Sands Airport into downtown Hendersonville starting July 1st 1942 continuing until they closed operations September 30th 1945 [* Beech Aircraft Corp.: Converted facility located at 9200 Rosemont Blvd Ste 1400 * since 1999]. Alongside businesses located Downtown like J&J Marts Chevrolet Lube which operated continuously until 1978 (* closing date unknown*) numerous restaurants started up including Eagle Rock Cafe(* opening date unknown*) among others throughout downtown Hendersonville*. One notable business closure occurred during this time period was The Post Inn which left downtown Hendersonville for good around 1984*. New Haven underwent significant growth during the 1830s and 1840s, becoming one of the largest cities in central Indiana. The city expanded northwestward into what is now Delaware County in 1845, annexing portions of neighboring townships along the way. By 1860, New Haven had grown past its original boundaries and become an entirely self-contained municipality with a population of over 250,000. The city joined forces with other central Indiana municipalities in 1870 to form the Indianapolis metropolitan area.
