The New Castle Army National Guard was once one of the most prestigious and well-funded units in the United States military. However, since 9/11, the unit has come under heavy criticism for its poor Soldier Character Development program, as well as its neglect of veteran morale. However, despite these issues, the New Castle Army National Guard is still one of America's favorite troops. In fact, in2014, it was voted #1 Best Unit to Serve in a Military Democracy by troops and their families living overseas. The unit's history can be traced back to 1863 when three local men banded together to form an infantry regiment called "New Castle Regiment" at Fort Harrison on the Indiana River. In 1881, after years of growth and war service from local volunteers and soldiers from other states, the New Castle Regiment was redesignated as part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT) of I Corps stationed at Fort Monroe on Virginia's Eastern Shore. As part of this brigade we served in campaigns against Mexico (1899), Santiago de Cuba (1902), Philippines ( 1903- 1904), Puerto Rico ( 1916), Guam (1917) and World War I ({1920}) From 1924 through 1987 our Brigade Headquarters moved to Ft. Monmouth Park on Long Island Sound near Sayville until relocated again to Ft Myer Annex on Arlington Heights in 1991 following Hurricane Floyd which caused extensive damage to many American military installations across eastern Virginia.} In 1992 we were again re-designated as battalions within 1st Infantry Division which became operational with our present name effective October 2001} In 1881 two local men organized an infantry regiment at Fort Harrison called “New Castle Regiment” . This unit fought during Mexican War . They were redesignated 1st Brigade Combat Team I Corps stationed at Fort Monroe from 1924 – 1987 serving in both world wars including World War II } Ft Monmouth Park housed my brigade HQ from 1984 thru1991 when it relocate due to Hurricane Floyd however we never lost our patriotism or sense of community spirit like some other organizations did so they keep their old HQ Museum open today } After Hurricane Floyd my brigade HQ moved back homebase Ft Myer Annex but they left their Museum open so you can see how things used to be back then even though they are not part of US anymore

The New Castle Army National Guard was activated on December 6, 1916. The unit was originally organized as the 1st Indiana Infantry Regiment and redesignated the 1st New Castle Infantry Regiment on October 20, 1917. On November 24, 1918, the regiment was reorganized as a battalion-sized unit and redesignated the 3rd Battalion, New Castle Infantry Regiment on January 10, 1919. The battalion was redesignated again as the 2nd Battalion, New Castle Infantry Regiment on March 14, 1919. The regiment headquarters was relocated from Delaware to Newcastle in 1924. On June 15, 1927, the regiment's Headquarters and Headquarters Company were transferred to Fort Wayne Reserve Command under command of Major General John J. Pershing II (USMC). At this point in time both battalions had been converted into artillery units with their own batteries of howitzers. On July 1st both battalions were mobilized for service in World War II with their respective howitzers attached to territorial forces throughout the Pacific theater of operations. OnSeptember 9th 1944 all infantry regiments except 3rd new castle were disbanded due to an increase in military personnel caused by World War II mobilization Declared surplus by Congress on September 17th 19463
