The city was reorganized as a village in 1868 and then as a city in 1907. New Albany is the seat of Hamilton County, Indiana and has a population of over 200,000. The city is known for its manufacturing industries such as textiles, Rubber, plastics, aluminum and automobiles. There are also several college campuses located within the city limits: The University of Notre Dame (founded 1795), Purdue University (1827), Northern Illinois University (1892), and Butler College (1962).
In 1814, the first white settlers arrived in New Albany, Indiana. The town was founded by Captain John Mellinger on the north bank of the White River. Mellinger and his family built a log cabin and started to trade with the Native Americans. In 1818, Mellinger sold his land to James Ford. Ford developed the town into a small trading post and began to grow crops. In 1824, Ford hired a man named John Fleming to build a mill on the White River. The mill produced flour for local merchants and also processed timber for construction projects. In 1830, Ford sold his property to Amos Kendall and Alexander McNaughton bought it from Kendall. McNaughton continued to operate the mill until it shut down in 1851. New Albany became an important trading center during its early years.
