New Albany, Indiana is a small town in the state of Indiana. The population was 5,000 at the 2010 census. It is located in Clay County. New Albany is one of the oldest towns in Clay County and has been settled since the early 1800s. In 1810, William Ladd purchased land from the Potawatomi Nation and founded New Albany as a new settlement. The town was named for John Neely Bryan, an American politician who served as Governor of Michigan from 1829 to 1830 and United States Senator from Ohio from 1840 to 1845. New Albany was also named for General James Neely Bryan, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Marshal general during the American Civil War. Today, New Albany is a popular tourist destination with its rich history and architecture. New Albany is located on the east bank of River Raisin which forms part of eastern Clay County. The town sits on high ground overlooking several miles of river valley which makes it an excellent location for commerce and agriculture. The river provides water transportation to many local businesses while also providing access to hunting and fishing opportunities both upstream and downstream of New Albany waterways. New Albany was founded in 1824 by James K. Polk and his brother, George. The city is the seat of New Albany County and has a population of over 122,000 today. New Albany is one of the oldest continuous settlements in Indiana and it is also one of the most important commercial centers in the state. The city was originally named for the nearby Frenchtown settlement, La Salle, but it was changed to New Albany in 1824 after James K. Polk became governor of Indiana. In 1828, John P. Carpenter erected a grist mill on what is now State Street in New Albany and this mill provided flour for local farmers until 1830 when a new gristmill was erected on Black Creek which continued to be used until 1870. In 1840, John Hays opened a hotel near Old Keystone Road and State Street which became known as the Hays Hotel. The first post office in New Albany was established at Keystone Road on October 11th,1844; it remained open until July 1st, 1850 when it moved to Pioneer Court where it remains today. By 1850, many small businesses had been built around Central Avenue between Keystone Road and Washington Avenue; these businesses included groceries (particularly bakery), liquors (such as whiskey), saddles (including wagons loaded with hides) and tools (most notably axes). One such small business owner was John Sibley who operated an agricultural warehouse at 5th Street and Meridian Avenue from about 1851-1857; this business served as a link between local farmers and larger grain elevator companies across central Indiana during this time period. On November 15th, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No.; 9271 which called for all citizens of United States territories west of Mexico City to arms against Mexican aggression; within two years thereafter numerous shops were closed up along Central Ave due to increased military pressure from Confederate forces occupying Mexico City
New Albany was founded in 1814 by Hugh Lawson and his family. The town was named for General George Rogers Clark, who led the United States during the War of 1812. New Albany became a part of the Indiana Territory in 1816. The city's first mayor was John P. Morton. New Albany's first school was built in 1820. In 1865, the town voted to secede from Indiana and become an independent state. The city lost its autonomy within Indiana after the statehood referendum, but it has continued to exist as a community within Union Township, Hendricks County, Indiana since then.
