New Albany is a small town in central Indiana, located on the banks of the White River. The population was 7,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in New Albany was Jacob Fortenberry in 1814. He and his family founded a log cabin near what is now downtown New Albany. In 1821, Fortenberry married Anna McNeely and they moved to what is now east side of town. They had six children: John McNeely (1822-1892), James McNeely (1824-1912), Mary Jane McNeely (1827-1900), Margaret McNeely (1829-1923), and Emma Fenton (1831-1920). In 1825, John McNeely's brother James bought some land from the government for $5 per acre and began to build a house thereon. That same year, he became an officer with the United States Army under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican War. After serving two years as captain at Boonville Station onthe Ohio River, James returned home to New Albany in time for his brother's inauguration as Mayor in January 1828. 7 months later, on October 3rd of that year, James' wife Anna gave birth to their first child: John Patrick McNeely Jr.. John Patrick grew up in New Albany until he came out to Purdue University where he earned a degree in civil engineering in 1934 before moving back home to be with his parents who were also immigrants from Ireland originally settling near Watertown, Massachusetts but moving to New Albany when John was young because they thought it would be easier for him to get an education here than anywhere else outside of Ireland! His father died when he was only 24 years old; his mother remarried after his death and she continued living there until her death about 5 years ago! John Patrick has always been an extremely active member of local civic groups both inside & outside of town! In 1814, James Kapp of Dearborn County built the first sawmill in the town. The mill continued to be operated until 1915. In 1834, a theater was built in New Albany and remained in use until it burned down in 1928.
