The history of the New Albany, Indiana Army National Guard begins in 1887. The first organized unit in the town was Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment, which served in the state militia during the late 1800s. In 1898, a group of men from New Albany formed themselves into a company while they were on vacation at Camp Nelson near Chicago. They decided to name their unit “New Albany” and began recruiting soldiers for service in India during World War I. In 1924, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Brigade and given its current name: The Honorable Artillery Reserve Indiana Army National Guard. On September 3rd of that year, Colonel John D’Angelo became Commanding Officer of brigade with orders to organize an artillery battalion stationed at Fort Wayne for use duringWorld War II. On November 8th of 1944, Colonel D’Angelo was transferred from brigade command to become Director-General of Military Intelligence for all United States forces overseas; this position held until his death on December 14th, 1945. Brigadier General John Gummer assumed command of brigade on January 1st 1946; he would serve until his retirement on October 11th, 1949. On January 7, 1865, the regiment left for the Confederate States of America and fought in the Battle of Fort Donelson. The regiment lost two officers and seventy-six enlisted men in that battle.
