The New Albany Air Force Base is home to the 5th squadron of the Indiana Air National Guard's 137th Wing. The wing was activated on July 1, 1948 at New Albany Municipal Airport. It has been stationed at the base since then and its mission is to provide air force support for state and local government agencies in central Indiana. The 137th Wing provides passenger air service for passengers and cargo on behalf of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) as well as other state and local government agencies. The wing also provides rotor-craft services for law enforcement activities, search and rescue, homeland security patrols, and other missions. As a result of its many years of service to INDOT,the 5th squadron has developed some great relationships with both our customers and our employees here at the base! In addition to providing passenger air service for passengers and cargo on behalf of INDOT,the 137th Wing also provides rotor-craft services for law enforcement activities such as search and rescue; homeland security patrols; emergency response;and more! In honor of its long history with INDOT - from providing passenger air service to providing rotor-craft services - we wanted to do something special for our employees here at the base! New Albany, Indiana is a small town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,089 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Harrison County. New Albany is located on theexact same spot as the site of the first permanent European settlement in what is now Indiana, by French traders in 1788. In 1816, it became part of larger Uniontown and later annexations of other settlements in what are now western Illinois and eastern Kentucky. The town was founded about 1800 by Nicholas de Bataille and his family from Normandy on a tract of land acquired from Chief Miami near Dunkirk. They erected a log house on a bluff overlooking the river that became known as "New Albany." The first post office opened in 1802. New Albany grew steadily until its incorporation as a municipality in 1907. By 1912 it had incorporated as thirty-six separate municipalities with a total population of over 344,000 people; however its size made it difficult to operate an efficient government andLimited property rights limited growth opportunities for most residents which led to gentrification beginning around 1970s when wealthier residents moved into the older sections while less affluent ones lost access to education and health care services
New Albany was founded in 1787 by John Nicholson. The first post office was established in New Albany in 1793. In 1814, the town became a county seat of Posey County. New Albany lost its status as a county seat after the creation of Elkhart County in 1847.
