Munster, Indiana is located in the middle of the state of Indiana. The city was founded by the Munster brothers in 1829. The city was named for John Munster, a Revolutionary War soldier and landowner who donated lands to the town. The first post office opened in Munster in 1830. In 1840, Munster became a county seat of Posey County. In 1854, Posey County was dissolved and merged with Wayne County to form Howard County. In 1911,Howard County was renamed Munster again and its seat remained at the city until it left Indiana in 1996. On July 1, 1896, Munster became a part of the new state ofIndiana as well. Munster has been home to many important people in its history including David Ziegler who served as mayor from 1971-1975 and 1978-1981; Colonel James Aiken who commanded First Brigade Combat Team 3rd Infantry Regiment during World War I; Dr. Richard Wolkstein who worked on developing vaccines for polio; Judge Royce Lamberth who presided over trials during the Nixon impeachment trial; and Mayor John D’Angelo whose term ended after being impeached in 2000 along with his fellow mayors Tom Vilsack and Rudy Giuliani. The downtown area contains several buildings that were built between 1850-1920 such as Assembly Hall which served as a meeting place for local farmers and merchants before it burned down in 1919; Mulberry Street Methodist Church which is still used today as an overflow room for events such as baby showers or funerals; and Youngstown State Hospital which was built between 1922-1924 following a request from President Franklin D Roosevelt to provide more medical care for American citizens living overseas during World War II
