Munster is a city in northwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 21,531 at the 2010 census. Munster is the county seat of Putnam County. It lies on the east side of the Inland Empire River and on its border with Elkhart County to the south. The first European settlers in what is now Munster were Frenchmen who arrived around 1765. They built a trading post near present-day downtown Munster and named it Fort Pitt. A fort was also built on the riverbank near where current day Market Street and State Street cross. In 1814, General Morgan led American forces against Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo, Victory Road crosses over from Elkhart County into Putnam County as he advances upriver towards Dublin (now Peoria). Here General Morgan placed cannons along both sides of road to prevent any Saracen cavalry or Indians from crossing for plunder or revenge against his retreating army. In 1833, infant mortality rates were high enough that Indiana Governor Daniel Boone recommended that state legislature establish a school system in order to reduce child death rates by 50%. The first public school in Munster opened in 1835 under instruction from Reverend John Sibley (a teacher who had moved to Munster from Terre Haute). In 1840, whenIndiana became a state, putnam county was organized out of part of Crawford county which included parts of today's Munster and Elkhart Counties. A courthouse and jail were built in downtownmunster between 1840-1842; they are still standing today as part of Old City Hall Park complex which also includes several other buildings including Bank of America building visible across street) In 1847, an act providing for township government was filed with the state legislature; this act created what is now known as Township 5th Assembly District (). Munster was founded by John and Anna Munster in 1837. It was incorporated as a town in 1907. Munster has been an agricultural community since its founding. Today, Munster produces apples, peaches, grapes, corn and other vegetables. The village also manufactures items such as hats and T-shirts for local businesses. In addition to its agricultural products, Munster also manufactures fabricated metal products such as car parts and hinges. The first people to settle in what is now Munster arrived around 1837 when John and Anna Munsters moved from Middletown Township in Kosciusko County, Ohio to start a farm on land they had purchased from the Muskingum River Indians. They named their new home "Munster." After some time they decided to move again so they bought another piece of land which they cleared and built a cabin on - this one known as the "White House" after Anna's sister (and future wife). From this initial settlement themunsters grew crops and started making money from their enterprise which allowed them to purchase additional land which they developed into a full-fledged town by 1907 with 12 buildings including a primary school/library/theatre/ garage etc., 2 stores (John & Anna), 3 blacksmiths (2 brothers), 5 sawyers (3 sons), 4 farmers (6 husbands & wives) all partnership Agrarian society with 30 acres Cultivated land; limits: no slaves then or ever accepted but did minors have right to vote if apprenticed before age 21 mulatto Unfree labor under contract not counted against Limits established by Act of Congress Dec 3 1861 All adults except minor males were required by law to attend church services regularly& paid tithes & quitters fees nonresident aliens who resided within limits were exemptvoted@elections held at stated times every alternate year between May 16th thru December 15th The elections were open To all residents of good moral character freeholders over twenty years old male or female No vote given until age 21 There was no political officeholder Elected Officials: Mayor—First Term—Not elected; First Lady—Third Term—Not elected; Justice Of Peace—First Term—Not elected; Treasurer—Second Term.— Not elected
