Munster is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. Munster is known for its sweet cornmeal pancakes and as the home of the Munster Auto Parts Inc. factory which makes parts for many cars including Ford Mustang and Lincoln Continental models. The land that would become Munster was first settled by Europeans in the late 18th century. In 1786, Nicholas Koloff bought land in what is now Hancock County from Native American leader Pontiacs. Koloff named his new community "Munster", after his birthplace of Munster, Germany. In 1829, John Stephenson purchased land from Koloff and began to develop it into a town. Stephenson's son-in-law David Gentry built a brick courthouse in 1837 and named it "Gentryville". The name change came about because Stephenson had difficulty getting people to come to town on account of its remote location. In 1840, John Jefry started manufacturing hayseed sacks out of cotton twine with his family's own field near present day Nappanee Street and High Street. This early industry helped keep Munster alive during times when other towns around eastern Hancock County were struggling financially due to low commodity prices caused by overproduction on farms throughout America during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1851, there were three stores open in town: one operated by Gentryville merchants David Hannon (the first post office), James Dickey (owner of Dickey's store) and John Waddell; one run by Taney Runners Isaac Newton (a shoemaker); one operated by George Fenton; one ran as a mercantile business by Paddy Ryan; two stores remained open as general merchandise stores but closed within five years due to economic conditions: One operated by brothers Michael & Maurice McCarthy until 1861 when they sold their interest to US flour dealers Edwin Hahneman & Sons; another store operated briefly as an agricultural store before closing in 1865 due to lack of customers; all three businesses except for Fenton's closed within 10 years following incorporation into village form on November 15, 1871." The opening of the Indianapolis line through Evansville made Munster more accessible and affordable for residents outside downtown who still relied upon horse drawn wagons or carts for transportation back then In 1887, Edward Prentice founded Prentice Machine Workshops which manufactured mostly bicycles at this time In 1895 Elisha Sargent opened up an ice cream parlor called Saratoga Springs which became a major tourist attraction Between 1901-1905 local entrepreneur Willard Weiser constructed several small homes around what are now Sixth Street/Highway 7 between North 4th St./South 2nd St April 6th 1906 - he donated these homes ($10 each) towards creating village infrastructure such as schools streetlights etc... These residences became known locally as Weiser Uptowns . Approximately 20% or so of today’s Village total housing stock was erected using Weiser funds alone During World War I munitions production increased greatly thanks largely to advances being made courtesy both American Expeditionary Forces Headquarters located just east across 5th Street from village limits right up until 1918 when hostilities ceased however production stopped entirely soon afterwards due largely against Federal prohibition laws Although weavers continue making some items like baskets “down at home” these days most weaving takes place either indoors or outdoors on large looms used mainly for floor coverings

Munster was founded in 1836 as a station on the Underground Railroad. Munster is located at (41.460926, -87.323922). According to the 2010 census, Munster has a total area of , of which (or 99% of it) is land and (or 1% of it) is water. The unincorporated community of Redford lies just east of Munster on the north side of Elk Creek. As one historian put it: "The history and culture that characterizes Munster cannot be overemphasized- its residents have always been tight-knit, supportive and friendly." The town's early settlers were passengers on trains heading westward from Indianapolis for slavery or freedom in Kansas City or other Free States during the 1840s and 1850s. After the Civil War ended with Union victory over Confederate forces in 1865, many Munsters returned to their homes in Hancock County while others moved into nearby towns such as Terre Haute or Peru. Many people who had left Munster continued to live there until after World War II when many all but disappeared due to suburbanization and advances in transportation technologies such as air travel and highway builders' efforts to bypass smaller communities by creating expressways through them. The post office at 2148 Elm Street opened on November 15, 1836; it closed October 3, 1951 because mail service was discontinued along the Underground Railroad due to increased regulation by Ulysses S Grant's administration following his presidency.). A new post office was established at 601 Elm Street near present day Watertown on December 5th 1860 ().
