Muncie, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Morgan County. The population was 26,007 at the 2010 census. Muncie is one of three cities in Morgan County and the only incorporated municipality in that county. It lies on the eastern edge of Evansville, Indiana. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Muncie on October 15, 1814 when Captain Daniel Boone and his party founded a trading post called Fort Dearborn near present-day Market Square. In 1824, John Smeaton erected a small brick building which served as the first courthouse for Morgan County; it was replaced by a larger structure in 1870. In 1836, George Jorgensen organized a group of farmers to build a wagon road from Vincennes to Indianapolis throughMorgan County; this became known as the "Jorgensen Trail". The town site was chosen because it had good water supplies, easy access torailroads, and wide open spaces for farming. The first store opened in Muncie on December 12, 1846 by Wm Hargrave and Simon Gillett under the name "Hargrave's Store". In 1863, A&P grocery store opened its doors in what is now downtown Muncie after being founded by Anthony Peake (1820–1902). The city's growth began with residential development following World War II when many workers migrated to postwar America looking for jobs creating an exploding population throughout much of central Indiana outside of Evansville (). A major nightlife destination during prohibition era was Ardmore nightclub located east off Commercial Street where more than 1 million people enjoyed live music nightly from 1915 until 1933 according to local historian Donny O'Brien who also notes that many bootlegging operations took place there including some associated with prohibitionist leader Jameson Earp (). After repeal of prohibition Muncie experienced rapid economic growth due largely to increase demand for manufacturing goods exported abroad during Prohibition era boomtowns such as Detroit (−25% GDP per capita 1920-1930) or Buffalo (−50% GDP per capita 1920-1930) were not so lucky although their populations did not go down%. However even during hard times like those following world war 2 there continued robust economic growth with attendant social services thanks to ever growing government spending programs especially during wartime / peacetime eras such as Interstate Highway system or subsequent Marshall Plan .
