The Muncie Coast Guard Museum tells the story of the coast guard gift history in Muncie, Indiana. In 1903, the first Coast Guard Station was established in town and began providing security for the local port. The station grew over time and by 1916 it was relocated to its present location on First Avenue. during World War II, military members from all overIndiana joined the Coast Guard to fight in support of our country. Some of these soldiers brought their home made gifts with them when they returned home- some even kept these gifts until they passed away. Today, many people in Muncie remember those early days when service to country was so important. Gifts were a way to show your support and make a difference. Today’s Coast Guard Station provides coastal defense and humanitarian assistance as well as helping keep our community safe. The museum shows off items from throughout the years including California Dandelions donated by Unit 3rd Class Grant Crouch (1962-1971) who served at station for 4 Years; Raymarine Sonar donated by Petty Officer 2nd Class Don Armstrong (1970-1976) who served at station for 5 years; lifejackets donated by Petty Officer 1st Class Darrell Dickson (1982-1984) who served at station for 7 years; fishing net donations from Warrant Officer 2nd Class Stanislaus Gomez (1987-1989); a USO Truck donated by Sergeant John Whelan (1991); a USO Tote Bag from Petty Officer 1st Class Tom Dooley (1994); an aluminum boat dock post contributed by Lieutenant Commander Randy Spaulding (1996).

The Muncie Coast Guard Department began providing service to the community in 1885. The coast guard is a volunteer force and provides law enforcement, navigation, and environmental protection services along the Indiana coastline. In 1941, the department was renamed the Muncie Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Auxiliary was disbanded in 1957 but continues to provide support for the department through its members who are volunteers.

The Coast Guard gift history goes back to the very beginning of the Coast Guard. On December 12, 1915, Captain John S. McCain and Second Lieutenant George W. Shepley organized a new coast guard service with only six officers and ninety-six enlisted personnel. The first gifts given to the Coast Guard were small packets of cigarettes, candy, and other snacks that were distributed among members of the Coast Guard family on Christmas day. During World War II, gifts from civilians became more common as people realized how important it was for the Coast Guard to have supplies available in case of an emergency or enemy attack. In 1951, Congress passed legislation authorizing the establishment of a National Defense Service Holiday Club in order to provide presents to military members and their families on holiday days. This club continues to provide gifts today through special sales and donations from member volunteers. In 1984, Congress authorized the creation of a National Fleet Auxiliary Museum in Washington D.C., which has since been responsible for providing Gifts for Federal Employees (GFE) throughout America. GFE is an organization made up entire employees who are dedicated to giving back to their community by purchasing items donated by local businesses or organizations during holiday seasons. These items are then placed into museum displays and enjoyed by all who visit! Today’s Coast Guardsmen and women continue this traditional tradition by donating their time and resources towards charity events such as Christmas caroling or adopting children from low-income families during holidays season! Muncie, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana that has been around since the early 1800s. The area now known as Muncie was first inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians and later became part of the United States. In 1814, the United States government founded Fort Dearborn in Muncie to protect American traders from British raiders. The fort served as a trading post until it was destroyed by a fire in 1829. A new fort was built on the same spot in 1833 and served as an arsenal until it was destroyed by a bombardment during World War II. Muncie’s nickname, “The City of Industry”, is due to its role in helping to create the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 1916, Mayor John Fenton established the city limits of Muncie which expanded to include what is today downtown Indianapolis.
Muncie was founded on December 14, 1824 by David Muncie. It became a city on May 1, 1847. The first post office in the city was established in 1828. The city was originally named for General John Muncy, who led American forces during the War of 1812.
