In Mooresville, Indiana, the military has been a part of the community since its inception. The town was named after General George Washington and his aides-de-camp, James Moores and Nicholas Moore. The first military detachment in the area arrived in 1814 when Colonel John C. Frick founded the First Regiment of artillery in order to help protect against Native American attacks. A year later, General Anthony Wayne stationed a brigade here under command of Lieutenant Colonel William Troup. The Second Regiment of artillery arrived in 1816 and soon became an important part of the local militia force. After Indian War hostilities ended in 1817, General Andrew Jackson appointed Major General Peter Sturgis as Commanding Officer for this regiment. The unit participated in many campaigns during the 1830s and 1840s including Creek Wars (1828), Black Hawk War (1836), and Seminole Wars (1845). In 1846, after Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson on account of their support for President James K. Polk, Captain Samuel Dickson organized a company from Company G2/11th Infantry to attack Confederate lines at Stones River near Atlanta. This action is often cited as one of the most important engagements of the Union army during the war because it resulted in almost 10 thousand Union casualties while five hundred Confederate soldiers were killed or taken prisoners. After Reconstruction ended following slavery’s defeat at Appomattox Court House, Indian removal began which led to large numbers of African Americans being brought into Indiana Territory via wagon trains called “Trail rations” by Army officers interested in acquiring them as slaves or labor power on farms around Mooresville and other areas along Interstate 65 until 1865 when all black troops were mustered out Of service at that time there remained only black soldiers who served honorably until 1971 when they were finally discharged from service with honorable discharge papers
