The regiment was consolidated with the Elkhart County Militia on February 15, 1872. The regiment was disbanded on November 14, 1875.

Mishawaka was founded in 1827 as a small log settlement on current-day Route 9 south of present-day Crawfordsville. The original town site was surveyed by George Stephenson while he was working on his canal project through central Indiana. Stephenson named the new community after General James Fenton who had led Virginia during the Seminole Wars against Creek Indians and later served as governor of Indiana Territory during Reconstruction. A school district consisting of Mishawaka, North Moravia, White Township, Delaware Township, Clinton Township and South Union Township was organized within this newly constituted school district on December 1, 1893. On March 3rd of that year, just one day after incorporation into the new school district, an event occurred which remains significant to Mishawa
