Michigan City is a small city in the US state of Indiana, located on the banks of the Monongahela River. The population was 19,309 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute area. The land that now makes up Michigan City was first settled by people in 1795. In 1824, it became an incorporated town and was named for John Cushing, an early settler who had come from Connecticut. The town grew rapidly after being designated as a port on the Ohio River in 1828. By 1830, it had over 1,000 residents and was home to a cotton gin and several stores. Manufacturing began to grow in Michigan City during the late 1800s thanks to its location on the river and its ability to ship goods across country using canals and railways. By 1925, it had reached its peak with over 2,500 residents and 100 businesses. Michigan City was founded in 1833 by a group of Indiana pioneers as the nucleus for an Indian trading post. The town rapidly became a major center for agriculture and industry, and its citizens developed a strong tradition of community service. In the early 20th century, Michigan City become one of the most important centers of American Prohibitionism, playing an important role in the movement to end alcohol prohibition. The town also experienced dramatic growth during World War II as American industry shifted from production to production-based wartime industries. However, after the war ended, Michigan City began to lose its economic vitality, and by the late 1990s it had fallen into disrepair. In 2002, however, local officials announced plans to begin renovation and redevelopment of the town; this has led to renewed interest in Michigan City and its history. Michigan City is located on the banks of the Wabash River near what is now Fort Wayne. It was first settled by Indiana pioneers in 1833 as part of what would become known as Wabash County. By 1840, when territorial boundaries were established following Indian removal policies under President James K. Polk, Michigan City had grown sufficiently large that it became its own county seat. At that time it consisted only of a small cluster of homes around what is now Main Street. But within a few years business proprietors had organized themselves into businesses such as lumber yards and flour mills – all within walking distance of their homes or workplaces. The key development at MichiganCity's earliest stage came from two men: John Cramer (1802-1887) and his brother Daniel Cramer (1806-1892). John Cramer was born in Berrien County in Upper Canada but raised on land near Detroit where he learned how to farm while working on his father's farmstead before moving westward with his family in 1820 en route to find new opportunities himself (Cramer 1976: 9). Like many other early settlers in central Indiana Territory - including fellow Canadian Jeremiah Dixon - John Cramer formed close ties with fellow Hoosiers through agricultural work on his family's landowning farms hereabouts (Dixon 1949: 155). He also formed lifelong associations with local Quaker merchants who traded goods along both US-Canadian borders (Wright 1942: 173-175), something that helped him build up considerable assets during his youth – via purchasing power earned through farming activities plus smuggling profits earned from contraband trade between Canada and Mexico during those days (Cramer1976: 10; Wright 1992). Daniel Cramer arrived at MichiganCity just two years later than John Cramer did but quickly built up significant business skills within just 12 months or so upon arriving there too(Cramer 1976: 11; Wright 1992). Together they published an influential newspaper called The Weekly Gazette which soon became well respected throughout central Indiana Territory for itsdepth reporting abilities across a wide rangeof topics(Wright 1942: 175-176; cf.: Snyder 2008a). Daniel also played an important role within foundingthe first professional ice hockey team here – the Wolverines – which played their first game against Ottawa 67s December 6th 1835(Snyder2008b): 186).
