The Coast Guard was established on October 15, 1917 with the goal of providing law enforcement and first responder services on the Indiana River. The Coast Guard's presence has grown over time, and today it patrols more than 2,000 miles of coastline throughout Michigan City and adjoining counties. The Coast Guard Auxiliary provides support for law enforcement and First Responder functions; conducts special operations; helps protect vital infrastructure; responds to emergencies; educates the public about maritime safety matters;and participates in fund-raising activities. The Michigan City Coast Guard Auxiliary was organized on May 6, 1919. It was originally called the Indiana State Coast Guard Auxiliary. On October 1, 1928, it became the Michigan City Coast Guard District. The present name of the coast guard district is derived from its mission: To provide coastal security and assistance to law enforcement officials and civilians when needed; to promote maritime safety in the community; and to protect natural resources.
Michigan city is a small, less-populated town in the U.S. state of Indiana, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Fort Wayne and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Indianapolis. Michigan City was founded in 1837 by John Denny. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indio, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Michigan City" comes from one of its first settlers, James Ladd, who named it after his home state of Michigan. The town's location on the White River made it convenient for shipping goods and passengers across the river to Fort Wayne; this allowed Michigan City to become a major trade center for central Indiana during the early 19th century. In 1858, when Fort Wayne became an Army post and nearby Terre Haute became a civilian settlement, Michigan City lost much of its importance as a commercial center but continued to be used as a military base until 1959. In 1870, John Denny established what is now called "Denny's Corner," which became an important shopping district in downtown Michigan City; this area still retains many nineteenth century buildings including the Old Post Office building and several Masonic lodges/temples that are now open for visitation. By 1915, most businesses had moved out or been closed down except for two remaining grocery stores and one bakery; however, due to local growth and development over decades following World War I there has been steady revitalization with new construction throughout downtown since then including high-rise apartments overlooking downtown squares During Prohibition in 1920–21 most activity stopped in Michigan City because alcohol was not available through any legal channels other than buying it from bootleggers; however some commerce continued via underground routes while others developed as small bars and restaurants until finally becoming full-blown bars/restaurants once again around 2005 when brewing resumed onsite although limited quantities remain today In recent years there have been numerous efforts launched by government entities such as Mayor Darrell Hazan’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Inc., LLC to resurrect downtown areas such as Depot Square Mall which has seen redevelopment beginning immediately adjacent thereto with plans currently under way to bring more than 1 million square feet (100 m2) total retail space onto approximately 7 acres (3 ha). This would include significant job creation both inside and outside town walls with redevelopment possibilities also extendible into residential areas within minutes’ walk thereof
The Coast Guard has been providing emergency services since 1885. During World War II, the Coast Guard was responsible for lifesaving operations in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In 1953, the Coast Guard became a national security agency and began providing law enforcement and civil defense services. The Coast Guard’s first helicopter was piloted by an experienced pilot from the Air Force in 1969. Helicopter technology has since become standard on most Coast Guard helicopters, making them ideal for search and rescue missions as well as weather observation. In 1988, the Coast Guard adopted its current insignia- an orange “H” with a white line extending out from it- to commemorate its 1,000th anniversary. The United States Congress approved a bill honoring the Coast Guard on October 12 of that year. On November 15th, 1992, President George H. W Bush presented Rear Admiral John Sliney with a gold Medal for his accomplishments in leading the development of helicopters and other aquatic technologies while serving as Director of Naval Research at Sea Combat Command during Operation Desert Storm (1991-1992). Since then, Rear Admiral Sliney has served as Commodore emeritus of The United States Navy's 5th District which includes Responsibility For maritime operations along coasts From Gulf Of Mexico to Puerto Rico And Virgin Islands
The Coast Guard has been gifting gift items to individuals and organizations for many years. One of the earliest Coast Guard gift shops was located in Staten Island, New York. This shop sold gifts such as hats, coats, and other clothing. The Shop was known as the “Gift Shoppe” because it offered a wide variety of gift items for the coast guard personnel and their families. In 1922, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was organized and began gifting items such as books, radios, tools, and other equipment to groups of individuals or organizations who volunteered to help with coastal security. In 1938, the Auxiliary established its own gift shop on Governors Island which became known as the “Governor's Gift Shop” because it offered a wide variety of gifts for government officials including Members of Congress and high-ranking military officers. In 1958, the Coast Guard purchased land on Governors Island which became known as the "Governor's Landing" due to its location near many ports across New York State. This site became home to both the Governor's Gift Shop and an additional store called "The Library" which specialized in reading materials related to coastal security topics. The Library continued to be open until 1995 when it closed due to funding cuts within the Coast Guard budget. Today, there is still an active Coast Guard Auxiliary Giftshop located on Governors Island where members ofthe public can purchase various gifts related to maritime safety including hats, mugs, T-shirts & more!
Michigan City, Indiana was first settled in 1813 by French Canadian refugees. The town was named after the Michigan River. In 1834, the town became a part of the United States of America and was renamed Detroit. In 1849, the city became an official U.S. Census place and was renamed Michigan City again. The population of Michigan City peaked at over 20,000 in 1941 but declined to 10,000 by 1960 due to increased suburbanization and other factors.The population decreased further until it reached its current level of 5,500 in 2000.Michigan City has experienced several periods of growth and decline throughout its history. During the 1830s through 1840s, the town experienced a period of rapid growth due to its strategic location on the Susquehanna River between Pennsylvania and Ohio. By 1850 however, most residents had left for better opportunities in larger cities such as Detroit or Cleveland because of the depression that struck America during that decade.During World War II, many residents moved into central Illinois to take advantage of wartime jobs available there while others chose to stay behind to rebuild their homes and businesses after the war ended. However, during this time period Michigan City actually began experiencing decreases in population due to lack of opportunity and migration outside of central Illinois which eventually led to its current decline as a result. In 2000, when census results were released for central Indiana*, Michigan City had a total population (5,500) less than half what it had been twenty years earlier* (-50%). Though not completely declines * since then*, MICHIGAN CITY'S POPULATION LOSSES HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE LINSEY-TYPE DECLINE (i.,e., TOWARD SUBURBANIZED CITIES AND RURAL AREAS). This trend is particularly evident within Central High School District #1 where MICHIGAN CITY'S POPULATION HAS INCREASED BY OVER TWENTY THREE PERCENT FROM 1990 TO 2000 (+294 students), while THE HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT IS LESS THAN HALF AS populous AS IT WAS IN 1990 (+236 students).*[1] Overall though changes have occurred across all typesxdecreases with downtown losing some shopping districts along with smaller areas becoming more rural**; nevertheless good quality schools continue attracting people away from suburbs * (*See "School Rankings" later on this paper.). There are three main reasons for this trend: firstly; suburbanization has replaced manufacturing as the primary economic sector in MIchigan City; secondly; declining birth rates have caused families who once made a decision to move out towards larger cities or surrounding towns elsewhere rather than return home have done so at an increasingly faster rate*** [*see graph below]; finally†††; crime rates have risen dramatically among those who remain&‡§§(* see graphs "Crime Rates" & "Crime Trends"). Although these trends are concerning they can be reversed if measures are put into place such as aggressive policing programs which have seen significant reductions in crime rates overall within Central High School District #1 since 2003*** [*See "School Rankings" later on this paper.] As mentioned before there are multiple contributing factors towards decreasing population concentrations within Central High School District #1 *. Michigan City, Indiana was founded in 1824 by General Andrew Jackson as a small trading post on the Black River. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1835, Michigan City became the capital of the new Indiana Territory. It was renamed Indianapolis in 1792 after King George III's Irish queen, Marie Antoinette.
