Merrillville, Indiana is home to one of the oldest and most well-known small batch coffee businesses in the United States. The business began in 1906 as a grocery store run by John Merrill. The store became known for its traditional small batch coffee, which was ground and brewed on site. In 1951, John Merrill's son, Paul Merrill, took over the business. He continued to produce small batch coffee until 1984. In that year, Paul passed away, leaving the business to his son-in-law Bob Doherty. Bob ran the business until it closed in 1992. The Smallbatch Coffee Company has been mentioned in various publications such as "The New York Times", "GQ", and "Esquire". It has also been awarded several awards including being a finalist for Best Coffee of the Year at the 2018 World Coffee Awards.

The production of hard cheese began here in 1865, when John Fenton opened a dairy near what is now downtown Merrillville; since then, Hardee's has been one of the most important businesses in town. Today, there are more than 20 restaurants serving up cuisine from around the world in downtown Merrillville. Merrillville also boasts an extensive history with music. Beginning in 1902, local musician Pappy Van Winkle played live concerts at what is now called Papp's Tavern on Main Street (now home to Zaxby's). The show continued until 1984 when it was replaced by "Pennywise" nightlife programming hosted by comedian Jerry Seinfeld

Today, the community is small and largely residential. Merrillville is a city in and the county seat of Merrill County, Indiana, United States. The population was 14,332 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1824 by John Merrill and others as a trading post on the north side of what is now known as Grange Road between Delaware and Nobles counties. In 1830, Merrillville became an incorporated village under control of Fort Wayne. A post office was established at Merrillville in 1834, and by 1840 it had become a town with a government headed by a mayor and six council members. The first school was built in 1835; construction continued until 1851 when the earthworks were completed at present-day Southport Square. By 1860, all except one block of current downtown were developed and two blocks east of that were developing into what are now Pioneer square (later called Meridian square). In 1865, John Merrill donated land to create what would eventually become Northside High School which opened its doors in 1870. In 1896, Coolidge Elementary School opened which became home to the school district’s first high school (now Northside Central) after being moved from Dearborn Heights south to this location following annexation by Merrillville from Dearborn Heights Township in 1903. The city’s first library opened in 1907 (now within Citizens Bank Arena), followed by Our Lady Of Peace Catholic Church in 1909 for services conducted there until 1971 when it relocated to its current site across Meridian square from Grange Road Elementary School/ Middle School/High School
