Merrillville is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Merrill and named for him. Merrillville was laid out in 1817 by Nicholas Merrill as part of a land grant to him from Ulysses S. Grant. The first post office was established in Merrillville on December 7, 1818, and the first settlers were welcomed by the government with open arms because they were needed to help build Fort Dearborn which served as the garrison for India until 1827. In 1830, under the direction of Governor James K. Polk, General David Brown built Fort Dearborn on what is now Park Avenue and Trust Street in what is now Merrillville proper to protect American traders travelling through that area during the 1830s against piratical attacks from Native Americans who then controlled much of this region including parts of today's Butler County. In 1840, when Indiana became a state, Merrillville became its capital and it has been its seat ever since.
