Four years later, on July 24th, 1860, the USS Goodrich was Launched. In 1863, the USS Pembroke arrived in town and served as a harbor guard for several years. On November 1st of that year, the first cruiser in the Navy’s fleet appeared in town when USS Constitution sailed into our harbor. The navy continued to grow and by 1865 there were three ships operational: USS Monitor (1865), USS Princeton (1867), and USS New Jersey (1868). Three more cruisers were added over time- USS Georgia (1870),USS Maine (1871), andUSS Hartford Courthouse (1872). In 1893, it was decided that a new Naval Base would be established at downtown Merrillville with four ships: battleship Washington( 1893) , monitor Monmouth( 1895), destroyer Farragut( 1898), and tugboat Lake Erie.( 1899). This base would serve as homeport for all navy vessels docked at or working out of Indianapolis until 1923 when it moved to nearby White River Junction. The last active navy vessel in town was decommissioned on December 31st of 1927 after 45 years service! Merrillville is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Merrillville was founded in 1836 by Peter Merrill and his family. The original name of the community was "Merrillville Ferry." Merrillville's history can be traced back to 1836 when Peter Merrill settled in what is now known as Merrillville Ferry. At that time, it was part of Clay Township. By 1840, the village had a population of twenty-one people and two stores. In 1847, three families moved from East Chicago to form a new township - Merrillvale - with a population of fifty-six people. That same year saw the beginning of construction on what would become home to many famous residents including Andrew Jackson and Rebekah Brooks Woodruff (the first wife of Latter-day Saint Brigham Young). By 1860, Merrillvale had an estimated population of one hundred thirty four people and ten businesses. In 1870, the post office became known as "Merrilvile" after Mr. Merrill's brother Lawrence Murchison who served as Postmaster for forty years until his retirement in 1907. In 1881, local businessman John Augee erected a gristmill which soon became one of America’s most important stagescoops for cornmeal production due to its ability to provide consistent grades across multiple levels on nearly every night during harvest season; something not possible with traditional milling methods then prevalent elsewhere in Europe or North America... After harvesting their crops early this season they move their equipment downriver tomorrow morning into storage below Paull Dam –– where they will remain until market demand demands they be removed again next fall! This unique experience allows these farmers much needed respite from rigorous physical labor during late summer months while still being able to provide high quality products essential for human nutrition... Today many descendants still visit this historic site each autumn as part of their farm tours coordinated by Historic Preservation staff
Merrillville is a city in and the county seat of Merrill County, Indiana, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Merrillville was George Sibley on February 14, 1814. Sibley erected a log cabin on what is now State Road 3 south of town. On July 2, 1818, he married Sarah Worden and within two years their children were born: John (May 6, 1819), Martha (July 5, 1821), Joel (January 1, 1823), and Susannah (February 16, 1825). By 1830 there were nine families living in Merrillville. The first school was built in Merrillville on April 12th of that year by Fanny Morse as an academy for young ladies Seminary School #3 which later became known as Mrs. George Whetstone's Academy which operated until it closed down due to financial difficulties in 1896 also known as Mrs."George Whetstone's Academny" In 1840 Abraham Hahn established a gristmill located on present day State Road 3 just north of town with power from the river via an old white-oak tree that still stands today. Hahn grinded corn and wheat into flour for local merchants and sold it to those living near by or shipped it away for export to Missouri during the early days of railroad travel through central Indiana. In 1850 Hahn added a sawmill to his milling operation and by 1865 there were six mills operating in Merrillville including one owned and operated by Abram Hahn & Sons which continued operations until 1978 when it merged with another company to form Brown & Williamson Incorporated Hanson Manufacturing Company produced farm tools such as plows and tractors from 1944-2006 The city began hosting world championships lawn bowling events starting in 1984 then expanding into other sports over time like gymnastics (1996), trackand field (2007/2008), soccer(2009/2010) tennis(2011/2012) wrestling(2013/2014) boxing(2015/2016) mixed martial arts
