Merrillville, Indiana is home to the National Guard and has been a part of the United States since 1775. The present-day National Guard was organized on October 15, 1907 as the Indiana State Militia. The first unit activated were six cavalry companies from Merrillville. In 1916, the Guard was reorganized and redesignated as the Indiana Army National Guard. On July 1, 1960, the National Guard became an operational state militia with headquarters located in Indianapolis. Merrillville is a small town in the US state of Indiana. It is located in the central part of the Vigo County seat and has a population of 2,812 as of the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1852 by General James Merrill and his wife, Eliza Jane Merrill. Merrillville is named after General Merrill and his first wife, also named Eliza Jane. The city's namesake was General James Merrill who, during the American Civil War, fought for the Union army. He died in 1865 at the age of 56 from wounds he received at Gettysburg. The city's second namesake was Eliza Jane Merrill who married General James Merrill in 1851. She served as First Lady of Indiana from 1861-1865 and played an important role in early civic life in Indianapolis. As First Lady she helped establish the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) here in Indianapolis and also founded two schools: one for girls called India Hill School and another for boys called Cathedral Park School which remain active to this day. After serving as Mayor of Indianapolis from 1933-1935, Franklin D Roosevelt became President of America when he was elected on November 3rd, 1932. In his first term as President, Roosevelt made significant changes to government policy including enacting New Deal programs such as Social Security and Medicare which were later used to help create jobs throughout America during World War II. During Roosevelt's second term he signed Executive Order 9066 which ordered American citizens living abroad to present themselves before American authorities to be deported back home without any chance for asylum or defense if they managed to survive their journey overseas
The nation's guard is a paramilitary force that has been in existence since the Revolutionary War. The guard was established to protect national symbols and property, as well as provide personal security for the president and other government officials. In recent history, the Guard has become an important part of America's defense system. Some of the first National Guard troops were drafted during the Revolution. The Continental Congress ordered 625 troops to be raised in 1775. After the Revolution, the federal government needed a way to defend itself against potential attacks by state militias. On July 4, 1776, President George Washington signed a bill creating the Continental Army with 1,500 men from each state. The army was made up of militiamen from all over America and it was not subordinate to any one state or political faction. The Guard became an important part of American society after independence was won in 1777. The new country needed a militia to protect its citizens from possible invasion by France or Spain. To raise money for these purposes, Congress passed a series of taxes known as "the Intelligencer" bills. These bills funded military operations and increased troop levels within Massachusetts, Delaware, Rhode Island and New York City until 1800 when they were repealed because of budget deficits caused by war-time spending programs such as Alexander Hamilton's Treasury Secretary program. At times during peacetime there were insufficient unit numbers to meet theater-wide deployment requirements or enough officers available for mobilization; thus local units operated independently while reservists lay down their arms on call at home between deployments (Lincoln 1984). This situation changed during World War I with more than 4 million soldiers being mobilized through voluntary enlistment alone (Flamingos 1992). This mobilization created large numbers of volunteers who did not have immediate family members who could join them in service (Trembley 1994). Many Americans saw serving in wartime as an opportunity for patriotism and emulation rather than a financial consideration; this type of mobilization usually leads to social integration rather than separation (Flamingos 1992). After World War I Armistice Day formalities were completed which included disbanding many volunteer forces including most Guardsmen barracks closed down but armories continued storing weapons/ammunition/ stores etc... nationalism faded among returning veterans however some reorganized themselves into Regiments called Veteran Reserve Corps which served until 1946 when all reserve units were redesignated National Guard regiments

Merrillville is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1851 by John Merrill and James Laughlin as a post office on the site of what is now known as Merrillville Elementary School. The two men were merchants who built a new home for themselves on the edge of town and named it after themselves. Merrillville's first store opened in 1853. In 1857, the town incorporated and began to grow rapidly with its addition of a public school, churches, grist mills, lumberyards and other businesses. By 1860, Merrillville had become one of the largest communities in Hendricks County. During World War II, much activity took place at nearby Muncie Naval Air Station (now Muncie Municipal Airport). Many people from Merrillville came to work at NAS Muncie ornaments such as planes and antennas in support of naval operations during World War II. One local resident became an unofficial captain of NAS Muncie himself during this time - George Sibley Sr.. In 1951-1952 when construction began on Interstate 65 through Hendricks County, much development took place around Merrillville including growth in retail stores which reached its peak by 1960; however most major highway projects through Hendricks County were completed prior to that time so much development petered out into relative obscurity until the early 2000s when some new mixed use projects started taking form around downtown Merrillville near I-65/US 36 jobs corridor where many downtown businesses have since been replaced by apartment towers or strip mall developments complete with restaurants etcetera
