Merrillville, Indiana is home to one of the largest roasting companies in the United States. The company was founded in 1892 by John Merrill and his brother-in-law, Charles W. Holbrook. The company has since been renamed Merrill Roasters, Incorporated. The history of coffee in Merrillville began with small family-owned roasters that roast coffee for use in their own homes. In 1892, John Merrill started a small roastery on the corner of Third and Main Streets in Merrillville. He roasted coffee for his own consumption and sold it to other local businesses. In 1916, Charles W. Holbrook purchased John Merrill's business and continued to operate it as a separate business until he passed away in 1961. Over time, theHolbrook family donated much of their ownership stake in the company to various organizations including The Community Coffee Association (TCCA), which operates today as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organizationally connected with the City of Merrillville. In 1975, Joe Stafford bought out Charles W.'s share of the company and rebranded it as Joe Stafford's Coffee Company LLC with headquarters located at 256 S First Street in downtown Merrillville. At Joe Stafford's death in 1984, his widow assumed control over the company and continues to run it today as a personal brand managed by her children. During its tenure at 256 S First Street, Joe Stafford's Coffee Company LLC also served as an importer/exporter for Dutch Dovers Coffee from Holland and sourced beans from all over America before becoming one of only two U.S.-based importers/exportersof Indonesian coffee back into America after being exempted by President Nixon during his first term in office). As American inventors went about developing their new technology such as espresso machines (the first espresso machine was made by Angelo Bruno using ground beans brought over on horseback from Italy), so too did some entrepreneurs explore ways to bring fresh roasted coffee directly to consumers' doors; one such entrepreneur was Joseph Pulitzer who developed what would become known as "Pulitzer Prize" coffees - full flavored dark roast beans that were handselected by him personally or under contract from specific roasters worldwide who received special treatment during delivery - this program continued up through World War II when many Americans ceased manufacturing because they were needed abroad; these so called "Pulpits" were hand selected Guatemalan San Juan Capistrano Arabica Beans (now Columbian Robusta) offered free freight on orders above $50 when ordered through Mr.(now Mrs.) Pulitzer’s private direct sales network throughout America - making them not only unique but also affordable for everyone experiencing world war II dietary restrictions left over from pre-war Germany! The town was named after Merrill & Co., a local bank which first opened its doors in 1831. In 1924, city officials voted to rename the community after General James K. Polk because he had been governor of Indiana during much of that period and his family had an ownership interest in both banks which were then located in downtown Merrillville. The original name for the community was "James K.'s Landing" but it was changed again two years later when city officials decided that "MerrillVILLE" would be more appropriate for what was then a small community with only around 100 residents. By 1930, there were some 500 residents living in downtown Merrillville while additional businesses had been built up around it including a post office (1896), railroad station (1924), movie theater (1927), hospital (1948), fire Station #1 (1963) and current day hotel/B&B called Renaissance Place which opened in 2002. Downtown Merrillville has continued to grow over time becoming even more popular with today’s resident mix including professional commuters who work within walking distance of either its business districts or shopping centers while also enjoying easy access to Interstate 69 which runs through town center providing excellent transportation options for all those living hereabouts!
