In 1886, Mayor John Laughlin erected a large park on what is now Main Street near what is now State Street in memory of his fallen friends and family members who perished in battle during Reconstruction-era America. This park became known as "Laughlin Park" because Mayor Laughlin presented it to Colonel Augustus Wickersham (popularly called "The Father Count") on July 25th of that year.
