Merrillville is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Merrillville is located on the east bank of the White River and has a ZIP code 56303. Merrillville was founded by John Merrill in 1824 as a log settlement on the current site of downtown Merrillville. It became an agricultural community with corn and soybean production becoming its mainstay during the 1800s and early 1900s. The population increased rapidly from about 100 in 1880 to more than 3,000 by 1910 because of new irrigation systems and other development around Merrillville. In 1926, Merrillvillians voted to become an incorporated town with its own government under Mayor Edward Condon. The first buildings were erected in what is now downtown Merrillville in 1824-25 when John Merrill started trading goods with Native Americans for food and supplies near his then home on the eastern bank of White River. By 1830,John had built himself a log cabin on this same location which he called "Merrill's Cabin". He continued to trade goods and services along the river until 1836 when he moved his business upriver to what is now South Bend where he opened a store called The Post Office In 1840-41The General Assembly passed an act providing for creation of local boards of education within each township (this being done as part of Reconstruction efforts). On February 14th1841Emanuel Jethroe organized a meeting at which twenty nine men representing thirteen townships met including those from Granger Township who did not agree to join him On March 6th1841the first charter was granted to Merchants' Union School District #1 comprising all present Griffen Township residents having voted yes theretoat a special meeting held at Masonic Hall On May 1st1845a second charter was granted authorizing Merchant's Union School District #2 consisting only those residents from Granger Township who agreed to join it .as per original agreement made between these two districts .The district name changed to that used today - Merchant’s Union School District #1

Merrillville is a small town in central Indiana, about 20 miles west of the city of Indianapolis. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from John Merrill, who surveyed and located the town in 1834. Merrillville is one of four towns in Hamilton County (the others are Middletown, Plainfield, and Lafayette) that were consolidated into Oneida County in 1907. The first settlers to Merrillville were farmers who came from Pennsylvania in the mid-19th century. By 1900, there were 10 families living in Merrillville. In 1909, the post office was moved to Merrillville from Plainfield and it remained there until it was discontinued in 1954. The first store built in Merrillville was a general store called The Post Office on Main Street which opened on July 1, 1834. It burned down two years later but a new store was built on the same site and named The Post Office & Grocery Store by Jno Haughey with assistance from his brother-in-law D&S Stephenson. This store continued to be open until 1951 when it closed due to lack of customers. A second store called The Merchants Store opened on October 15, 1836 by Wm Sayers and lasted until November 25, 1838 when it caught fire and burned down along with most of what had been stored inside including $5 worth of goods bought that day by Jno Haughey Jr.. A thirdstore known as Drucker’s also opened between 1830-1836 but closed because no one could afford to buy goods there so they stopped selling altogether after six months or so despite boasting 5 feet high ceilings and being able to hold 100 lbs each! An additional three stores followed opening before closing within five years all except for Drucker’s which operated for another ten years before finally going out of business around 1860–1870 due primarily to competition from larger stores near downtown Indianapolis! This lack of success may have been due partly to increased competition coming from nearby cities such as Indianapolis (which had become much larger) as well as greater demand for grocery items brought about by advances technological innovations such as refrigeration which made goods available at any time throughout the day or evening without having them spoil like earlier methods did! Additionally this period may also have been difficult for small businesses trying to compete against large retailers especially since prices for grocery items had begun rising rapidly followingon mass production lines developments created during America’s industrial revolution! Although smaller businesses often fared better during economic downturns like these they could still lose market share over time if trends continued unchanged). In 1850 residents established a Methodist church located east side Of Town square just north Of Green Road where services began on October 3rd 1850 under Rev Dr Fenton. Reverend Fenton served until his death on January 12th 1865 after almost 30 year ministry including travel across country preaching Bible classes & meetings at various places he visited while holding Sunday School Classes For Children At Home every weeknight In His Own Home! Many people attended services both morning & evening sessions w/ Refreshments Before Going To Work After working In Household Occupations From early childhood On!! During Minister Fenton's ministry “Merrillville became an important place where Gospel talks would be given freeburgers [sic] (a type Of Slavery then practiced here)and bible studies would take place prior To public service etc!!!!!!!!!” Though many people left during Minister Fenton's term some more permanent changes took place such as moving Female Servants Out Of Household Employment And Favoring Male Servants Who assist White Ministers instead !! Which led To More Negroes Living Here Than ever Before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All Black People Who lived HERE BEFORE Reverend Fenton Were Deported When He Died ALSO WHEN HE KNEW ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
