Martinsville is a city in and the county seat of Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 18,771 at the 2010 census. The name "Martinsville" may be derived from French martinet (literally " soldier") because of its strategic location between two Revolutionary War forts, Fort Conestoga and Fort Wayne. The first permanent set of European settlers in what is now Harrison County were French Canadians who called themselves la Vallière. They built a trading post on the east bank of the Rea River near present-day Martinsville in 1788. The post served as an important center for trade with Native Americans and traders along the western frontier during the early 1800s. In 1818, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Indiana and captured Fort Conestoga on November 16th while besieging nearby Yorktown Heights under Lieutenant Colonel John Sellers. This event helped to stimulate settlement in Harrison County by leading to more people moving into what was then British Indian territory to begin farming and trading with local nations such as the Wyandots, Potawatomi, Miami, Shawnees, and Creeks.
