This ship served as part of the United States Pacific Fleet until its retirement in 1992.
Martinsville is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set eyes on the present-day Martinsville area were Frenchmen and Indian traders in 1769. A post office called "Martinsville" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1836, John Stephenson founded a log cabin community near Martinsville on the south side of the Monon River. Stephenson's community became known as Stephenson's Ferry because he used it to ferry logs from his sawmill at Clearfield to nearby supporters of his new campaign for Congress against incumbent Andrew Jackson. On July 15, 1839, following passage of the General Order No. 6 by Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Confederate forces under General Robert Easley burned all supplies and equipment at Stevenson's Ferry before retreating overland to Fort Henry outside Indianapolis). This event is often cited as marking the end of hostilities between Union and Confederate forces in central Indiana. Indiana State Normal School opened its doors for business on December 12, 1841 with 55 students aboard four boats moored along Browns Creek near what would become Martinsville Center today; however this was only temporary housing whileNormal School built permanent buildings on Monument Street east of Browns Creek which remain extant today as Giantcenter Mall martingale mall . In 1865 school relocated again when LaPorte County seceded from Indiana and chose to become an independent state; however Normal School continued operations as LaPorte County Teachers' Institute until 1908 when that institution too closed down due to financial difficulties.. During World War I (1914-1918), Martinsville served as a military supply depot for Camp Myer (later Arlington) north of Indianapolis; such activities included distributing food, gasoline and other munitions to units engaged in battle throughout Europe until 1919 when Camp Myer reverted back into civilian use.. During World War II (1939-1945), various industries operated outposts here such as Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company Winthrop Division Ammunition Plant which manufactured cannons ammunition components direct from their parent company(Allis Chalmers) without having any intermediate plant anywhere else involved .. At one time or another most major U S companies had some kind of manufacturing outpost or research lab located here like GE Aviation did their engine development center here ..
