Martinsville is a small town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Martinsville started as a small community on the north side of the Big Run River. A post office was established in 1852, and growth continued until the mid-19th century when whites began moving into what is now Martinsville from surrounding areas. In 1857, John Prentice built a sawmill on the south side of Big Run River and named it Prentice & Company after himself and his father. Growth slowed during the late 19th century as mills closed or were abandoned due to competition from nearby Evansville and Terre Haute. However, by 1910 there were 14 businesses in Martinsville with 3,000 residents. By 1920 there were 25 businesses with over 10,000 residents and Martinsville had become an important agricultural center with more than 100 farms producing hay, wheat, corn and other crops. In 1960–1961 white flight began to occur within Indiana as African Americans moved towards larger cities for work opportunities; this led to increased white populations in rural areas throughout the state but especially in Putnam County where many black people had lived since slavery. This change also affected Martinsville which lost its manufacturing base during that time period as companies moved their operations to larger cities or out of country countries such as Mexico or China instead of returning to India or China because of racism against those races at that time.
