The Marine Corps was founded in 1846 as the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines of the 1st Infantry Regiment. The battalion served initially in the Mexican-American War and later fought in various campaigns throughout the American Civil War. In 1865, the battalion was redesignated as Company E of the 9th Marines and fought in General Sherman's AtlantaCampaign. From 1886 to 1890, Company E served with distinction at Quantico during America's military effort against Spain. On September 12, 1888, Company E participated in the Battle of San Juan Hill after a three-day siege. The unit lost one man killed and thirteen men wounded during that engagement. The company also earned its first battle flag on October 3rd off Cape Lookout while repelling an attack by Spanish marines attempting to land at that point. During World War I, Company E reported for duty at home on April 15th 1915 and played an important role in supporting General John J Pershing's campaign along the Western Front. After World War I ended, Company E returned to Camp Lejeune where it remained until 1922 when it was redeployed overseas to serve with American forces fighting against Native Americans aboard ships under Naval Task Force 146 which carried out operations up through November 30th 1918 On December 5th 1922, Marines from Companies A and B were deployed to carry out amphibious assaults on Peleliu Island which resulted in two dead Marines and twenty-four wounded sailors In May 1954 Marine detachments arrived at Raritan Bay ahead of Operation Neptune Spear when New Jersey Governor Peter Brennan called for help securing Long Branch harbor In 1969 Marine companies began arriving at Placentia Harbor adjacent to Stockton Stonington duringOperation Neptune Spear when local fishermen discovered large quantities of treasure buried beneath their boats One marine company deployed ashore during Operation Enduring Freedom resulting in four dead marines including Sergeant First Class Michael Hennessey who had been fatally shot while leading security forces ashore

Martinsville is a city in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 27,503 at the 2010 census. The Dutch name of the town was "Mattersburg". It was named for General Andrew Johnson, who served as governor of Indiana during the American Civil War. The first settler in Martinsville was Nicholas Janssens, who arrived in 1786. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now the corner of State and Third Streets. A year later, he married Sara Cushman and they started to farm some land around their new cabin. By 1800, Janssens had four children: John (born about 1800), Nicholas (born about 1802), Anna (born about 1805), and Jacob (born about 1807). In 1810-1811, Nicholas' brother John came over from Maryland to help with the farm work. John's wife died young in India; he never remarried. In 1812-1813 Jacob moved to Canada with his parents until they decided to come back to America after taking care of their business there for a year or two. After return trip he started a small grocery store near where today's First National Bank building stands on Fourth Street between State and Seventh streets. In 1830-31 Nicholas' son Jameson became head shoemaker in this area so that people could buy shoes not made byavers because there were no factories then making shoes that would fit well even if made byavers’ sons! Jameson ran into financial trouble exporting these shoes so he closed up shop did all his own marketing including door-to-door selling! All his customers were shoemakers or their families! When it came time for him to retire at 65 years old he said “I have done more for this community than any man has ever done” but when you look at all those years lost due to bad business decisions Jameson should have retired 10 years earlier…..before he really hit rock bottom!. early development: The first house built in Martinsville was probably built by Nicholas Janssens circa1800 located on present day 3rd street & state avenue across from old shop mentioned earlier run byJameson family members prior to closure of original business due economic difficulties exported products direct from US via door-to-door sales approach unique among early 19th century industry
Martin'sburg was founded in 1792 by Captain John Martin, who named it for his nephew, James Martin. The first post office was established here in 1814. In 1836, the town of Martinsville was incorporated and Martinstown became its seat. The population grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, reaching over 1,000 residents by 1860. The great American Civil War (1861-1865) had a significant impact on Martinsville. Many Confederate soldiers were wounded or killed in battle here and many of the town's businesses were destroyed or closed due to the war. In 1865, when Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Martinsville to take command of all Union forces in Indiana, he visited the town square and ordered all merchant shops to close until after dark to make way for military stores. The following year saw another significant change when a railroad line was built through Martinsville from Indianapolis to Columbus Junction. This made it possible for farmers to shipment goods directly from their farms into Ohio without going through Chicago or Cincinnati
