Martinsville is a small, rural town in Monroe County, Indiana. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Steinbach, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Daniel Martin in 1824. The first post office was established in 1827. In 1851, the name was changed to Martinsville after General James K. Martins who helped build Fort Wayne during the American Revolution. In 1862, Martinsville became the seat of Monroe County after it was divided from Hamilton County. In 1868, it became a city and remained so until its annexation by Terre Haute in 1907. The population grew rapidly after annexation and it reached 2,000 by 1930. After World War II, the economy slumped and the city's population slowly declined until it reached its current level of 1,564 people in 2010. The downtown area contains a mix of Victorian and Craftsman styles buildings dating back to the late 1800s when Martinsville was an agricultural center with large orchards and corn cribs around what is now Center Street and Court Square.
