Martinsville is a small town in Delaware County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Martinsville occurred in 1814 when General David Hunter surveyor named it after Major Martin Lightfoot of the 3rd Regiment of Foot who had been killed during the Mexican War. A post office was established at Martinsville in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town site was patented to Daniel Boone on July 5, 1775 by John Trimble. In 1779, James White purchased land including what is now Martinsville from Boone for $5 per acre. White's land extended from Shields Road east to present-day Indiana State Road 56 and west to US Highway 33 Business (now I-65). The original settlers were farmers who grew corn and beans on their plots of land. It wasn't until 1810 that a store opened in Martinsville with two shelves selling groceries and one selling flour and other goods. The first settler to build a house here was John Stephenson who erected his home in 1812. In 1815, George Stephenson built an addition to his home which still stands today as a reminder of this early pioneer family activity locally. In 1830s local officials decided that new settlements should be formed near Evansville so they created routes connecting these new communities which included MartinsVILLE through Greencastle via Allentown thence via Boonesburg thence via New Albany Junction then south along I-65 into central Indiana where crops could be grown nearer markets resulting in increased trade and industry within the community thereby stimulating growth associated with village development around it resulting ultimately in incorporation as a cityhood within three years later becoming known as Indianapolis on December 15th, 1836 making it one of America's oldest continuously inhabited cities! With this increase came more need for housing so families began building suburbs such as Morton Grove on former Indian reservations several miles northeast also beginning streetcar service between these villages with passengers traveling door-to-door within each settlement enjoying shopping trips throughout both areas! In 1854, the state of Indiana donated additional land to theMartin family. This property includes present-day Martinsville Village Park and portions of Martinsville Township. The village continued to grow as a result of this donation and later became an incorporated municipality with its own government and police department. In 1925, part of Martinsville Township was annexed into Indianapolis. This annexation gave Martinsville Township its current boundaries which include all but what is now West Lafayette Avenue in Indianapolis proper, as well as most of eastern Bloomington Township including Greenwood Village and parts of East Gosnells Township also withinMartinsville Township’s borders.
