Martinsville is a small town in the state of Indiana, located about 30 miles southwest of Indianapolis. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Martinsville is part of the Evansville-Muncie-South Bend Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Martinsville was Jameson Willcox and his family who came to the area in 1826. The community name was derived from John Martin who built a house on the east side of present day Martinsville Rd. In 1830, George Wainwright settled in what is now Martinsville and founded a gristmill which he operated until 1840. He also erected several buildings including a log courthouse and jail which are still standing today. In 1843, Mr. Wainwright's son Elijah bought the mill from him and continued to operate it until it closed down in 1863 due to financial problems. In 1862, William Sibley built a large farmstead on land that he donated toMartinsville Township for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest on each year’s cash flow over two years This farmstead would eventually become known as White Sands Rancho de las Animas (later Red Sands). Sibley served as township trustee from 1865-1868 and 1870-1871; mayor from 1876-1877; justice of the peace from 1880-1888; treasurer from 1886-1901; and postmaster general 1898-1902 A blacksmith shop was established just north of White Sands Rancho de las Animas by Jno Haggerty in 1892 which later became known as Joe's Smith & Sons forge Incorporated . From 1903 until his death in 1951,Ironworker Sam Haggerty ran Joe's Smith & Sons forge with his sons Harry (Hank) and Lee (Grace) From 1919 until its closure in 2002,the village had its own water supply system utilizing an underground well drilled under adjacent farmland . In 1962, electricity began being brought intoMartinsVILLE through new transmission lines extending northwestward out of Indianapolis In 1969, Marty brothers Donnie and Rick decided they wanted their own place to call home so they started buying lots together throughout central Indiana ..... They named their new development "Martinsvillette" ....... In 1984 Donnie passed away leaving Rick as head manager ......Rick sold/leased portions of "Martysvillette" backcountry skiing operation to Summit Mountain Resort coining that term ..... Today much "new" development has sprung up around "OldMartysvillette", making it one busy ski resort ......... martinvilleschool District No 1 Elementary School opened its doors on October 1st 1979 with grades PK - 8th grade ................. Kruger is considered the father of modern roast-centric coffee production. He pioneered whole bean brewing and developed methods for packaging and shipping that made it easier for consumers to enjoy fresh roasted coffee. After Kruger's death in 1964, his son, Wim van der Walt took over his father's business and continue developing roast-centric concepts at Van der Walt Coffee Company. In 1814, a school was built andnamed the Martinsville Female Seminary. In 1829, a Baptist church was erected and named First Baptist Church of Martinsville. The population of Martinsville grew to over 1,500 by 1840. By 1850, the city had become an important transportation center due to its location on the Indus River. In 1865, a railroad line was constructed throughMartinsville and it became known as the Indianapolis & Indiana Railroad. By 1870,the city had reached its peak with over 3,000 residents. However, during World War II, many people leftMartinsville due to wartime restrictions on trade unions and agriculture; however, the city continued to grow until it reached its current size today
