The United States Army has a rich history in Martinsville, Indiana. The town was founded in 1814 by General David Martins and his troops as Fort Wayne. The fort served as a post of the Northwest Indian War and later served as the capital of Indiana from 1827 to 1848. In 1830, General Martin persuaded the U.S Congress to establish an infantry battalion known as Company K in Martinsville. The company was organized on December 15, 1830, and began service in the federal army that same year. In 1840, General Martin donated land to the town for its future military purpose. The town named their new military installation Fort Wayne after General Martin. It became one of the most important posts in early Indiana Territory and played a significant role in both wars against Native Americans and during Governor John Floyd's efforts to form a state from sections of Ohio and Kentucky. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Fort Wayne was renamed Fort Harrison and garrisoned Confederate forces loyal to Lieutenant Colonel Edward Seddon Johnston until Union forces destroyed it on November 4th. After Johnston's death at Goliad Court House on April 12th 1865, his brigade was transferred to Butler County under Major-General Sterling Price for duty against Johnson's Creek rebels withinIndian Territory while Price awaited orders from President Abraham Lincoln regarding his movements within central Kentucky prior to his march into northern Missouri on April 9th 1865 which resulted in Price's death at Murfreesboro outside of Nashville Tennessee just weeks before he would have assumed command over all Union forces within Indian Territory when Lincoln finally received word via courier messenger that Price had been killed at Murfreesboro instead)Fort Wayne reverted back to its original name after two years when it became again called Fort Harrison (now part of Merrill City).
