The history of the United States Air Force in Martinsville, Indiana begins with World War I. The war was fought on the homefront and the air force was created to provide service to America’s soldiers. In 1918, the first Americans served in World War I and were soon called up for duty in Europe. In 1921, General James S. Webb became director of military aviation and later served as commander-in-chief of American forces in Europe. He saw an need for a new type of bomber that could fly at high altitudes and drop munitions on enemy troops or targets deep inside enemy territory. This new aircraft was christened “the Boeing B-17 Bomber” and it quickly became one of America’s most successful weapons during World War II. Martinsville is named after Colonel Edwin Ladd who donated land to the city in 1922. The city was officially established on July 1, 1923 by order of President Warren G Harding. The first post office opened in Martinsville on October 8, 1923 under the name “Fenton” but changed its name to Martinsville on December 15, 1924 due to confusion with nearby Fayette County . The airforce base at Martinsville began operations on September 17, 1951 when it was transferred from Randolph AFB , Texas . It had been built as part of Project Northwind which aimed to develop a jet fighter capable of reaching high altitudes for strategic bombing raids against Japan .

In 1945, The Martinsville Men donated $5,000 to help purchase two B-24 bombers. These were used in combat during World War II and are still on display atthe Base today. From 1946 until 1951, they gave another $10,000 to help finance construction of several hangars and an airfield atthe Base. In 1954 they gifted another set of Gifted Certificates valued at$50 each to support training programs for cadets attending flying training schools at Mather AFBoutside Sacramento California; these programs continue today! In 1836, the area was damaged by a severe thunderstorm and many homes were destroyed. The town was rebuilt with assistance from the Indiana General Assembly. In 1840, Martinville became a county seat of Hendricks County. In 1847, the county courthouse burned down and was replaced by a new structure that still stands today. Over time,Martin'sville has become an important industrial center due to its location at the junction of two major railroad lines. The community also produced some of Indiana's earliest farmers and ranchers. During World War II,Martin'sville played an important role in providing materials for the war effort including munitions production and engineering work on military installations around Indianapolis. Today, the town retains some of its early commercial attractions such as a library and museum which open to the public every day from 9am-4pm.
