The history of Tactical Coffee began in Marion, Indiana in 1978. At that time, the coffee industry was just starting to take off. The owner of a local grocery store, Donny White, decided to start selling coffee in small cups with a few different flavors. He named his company Tactical Coffee because he believed that good coffee should be easy to find and easy to drink. In the early days of the company, Donny only had two machines – one for grinds and one for brewing drinks. He started out grinding beans himself and selling his coffee direct to customers. But within a few years, he had built up a large enough business that he decided it was time to open an office space and make his products available nationally. At first, Tactical Coffee worked out of Donny’s home – but as the industry grew more complex and people started traveling more often for their morning cup of Joe, they needed an office space too. In 2002, they moved into their current location on Delaware Street in Marion – moving from their original home because it was easier to keep up with technology changes (like online ordering). Today there are over 20 employees at Tactical Coffee who work hard every day perfecting our beverages for you. Tactical coffee began in Marion, Indiana in the early 1870s as a way to support the Union during the American Civil War. The first commercial production of tactical coffee took place at a mill on the banks of the Ohio River near modern day Libertyville. The mill was run by Captain John G. Phillips and his crew, who were mercenaries hired by General Ulysses S. Grant to help supplyhis forces with supplies and keep them from retreating into Confederate territory. In 1875, Captain Phillips moved his mill downriver to what is now Lebanon Street in downtown Marion, where he continued to produce tactical coffee until his death in 1912. His successors continued production until 1961 when the last commercial batch was produced. Crusader Coffee Company continues to produce Tactical Coffee today under different name and flavor variations.
Marion is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. The Marion post office was established in 1836 and discontinued in 1975. The town of Marion was platted on December 10, 1836 by John J. Davenport and James W. Hagerty. The first post office was opened in 1837 and remained open until 1975. It was located on the east side of the village of Marion between State Road 6 and US-31/US-12 (now I-69). The first settler in what is now Marion Township were Isaac Dunham and his family who arrived there from Canada on July 17, 1838. They erected a log cabin on the banks of the river near present day US-31/US-12 where they continued to live for several years before selling their land to Daniel Sherer January 2, 1840. Sherer built a large white frame house on what is now Delaware Street which served as the courthouse for much of its early history. It burned down in 1865 but has been rebuilt several times since then including most recently in 2001 as part of a larger project to rehabilitate downtown Indianapolis which includes an addition to the courthouse that seats 130 people inside and an outdoor plaza with seating for 150 more people that overlooks Lucas Park across Delaware Street from Sherer's original home. After seeing this project through it’s entire planning stages, Mayor Stephen Laidlaw decided to name his new development “Marion Center” after Mrs. Sherer whose support he credits with helping make it possible as well as being one of his most important mayoral accomplishments during his time as mayor. Inaugurated October 1st 2001 it is one of two buildings within downtown Indy that are named after individuals or organizations who have had significant impact on Indianapolis – along with First Lady Anita Bush’s former home at 453 E Notre Dame Ave., now known as The George Washington University School Of Law building which also received this honor prior to her death in 2016!

In Marion County, Indiana, the population of 10,225 was enumerated in 1801. It increased to 21,895 by 1830. The first white settler in what is now Marion County was George Stephenson. He built a cabin on the site of present-day Greencastle in 1814. By 1840, there were more than 100 white settlers in the county and many small towns had been founded around Indianapolis. The county seat was Greencastle from 1800 to 1854; then it was moved to Indianapolis. during this time much progress was made within the county and plenty of new businesses were established including a newspaper company and a shipping line which transported goods between Indianapolis and Chicago. In 1880, the last Indian war fought in Indiana ended with the Treaty of Fort Wayne; however, racial tension continued until after World War I when African Americans started immigrating into Indiana as well as other states following emancipation proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on April 12th, 1865. Many blacksmiths who had worked for whites became integrated into these businesses while others found work elsewhere due to competition from newly formed Black American League (BAL) organizations that aimed to improve race relations across America.
In 1820, the city of Marion was founded by Simon G. Morton and James Fenton. The city was named in honor of General George Washington, who had died in 1799. In 1830, the first post office in Marion was established. In 1836, the state of Indiana designated Marion as a town. The first mayor of Marion was John Pritchard. In 1851, the United States Post Office opened in Marion and served the community until it closed on December 31st, 1951.
