On February 14, 1840, the first school was opened in Marion by teacher John Atherton. On July 4th, 1907 Indianapolis moved from its original location six miles east of Marion to become an annexe of Marion due to overcrowding inside Indianapolis and because of concerns over pollution generated by the large number of automobiles then driving into the city center each day

Marion is a small town located in central Indiana. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first residents of Marion were men who had come toIndiana in 1827 from Illinois. In 1830, they organized themselves into a town government and built their first homes on the site of present-day downtown Marion. They named their new community after General Andrew Jackson, who had helped them gain admission to the Union as a state in 1829. In 1840, when the United States acquired Mexico's Texas Territory, parts of what are now eastern Indiana and western Ohio were included in UST Land Grant County. This included most of today's Marion County and portions of today's Porter Township and Hamilton Township also lay within UST Land Grant County at that time. In 1843, Congress created another land grant county - Hendricks County - which extended all the way down to Evansville (now Mythe City). This was because muchof what is now eastern Indiana and western Ohio was still part of Mexican Tx territory under American control at that time. As a result of this change in ownership, many early settlers in east-central Indiana migrated to areas near Evansville where they could find farmland or work on nearby mines or plantations. When Indianapolis became an incorporated city in 1855, it annexed much of east-central Indiana including Marion County along with other surrounding counties including Hendricks, Posey and Whitley Counties (later Cook). While Indianapolis continued to grow rapidly as an industrial center during this period – becoming one of America’s leading cities – Marion slowly lost its importance until it truly emerged as a thriving small town only starting around World War II when people began moving back there for agriculture reasons rather than industry growth opportunities. Today, almost all businesses located inside downtowns 400 feet or less from Main Street are related to agricultural production – such as agribusinesses such as Purdue University’s Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), Archer Daniels Midland Co., McCormick & Company/Kellogg cereal products manufacturing plants etc.– giving us another strong indication that economic development has been keeping pace with population growth hereabouts for more than 82 years!
Marion, Indiana is located in the United States of America and was first settled by the Hoosiers in 1824. The city was founded on a small farmstead by James H. Marion and his wife Nancy. The city's origins can be traced back to 1824 when James H. Marion purchased a tract of land east of Fort Wayne, Indiana from David Dixon. In 1827, Marion began to lay out streets and build buildings in what is now the downtown area of the city. By 1830, much of what is now downtown Marion had been built and it was incorporated as a village under the name of “NewTPark” on February 3, 1830. NewTPark became an independent municipality with its own elected officials until it merged with Indianapolis on January 1, 1871 as part of Indianapolis' municipal reorganization process which followed a mayoral election held that year between John Witwatersrand (D) and George Rogers Clark (R).
