Marion, Indiana is a small town located in central Indiana. The population was 5,521 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Marion County and home to the University of Evansville. The first people to live in Marion were French traders and travelers who came ashore on the Parke-Davis Expedition in 1814. For some time after that, it was a part of Miami County. In 1827, it became part of Lucas County when those counties were created from parts of Washington Township and Clearfield Township. In 1836, it became a part of Vigo County when that county was created from parts of Greene Township and Union Township. When Indian Territory became organized in 1839, Marion moved into it as one of its seven townships. The town has been around since 1800 and began as an agricultural community with farming as its main economic activity. By 1840, steamboats had started running between Indianapolis and Louisville so there was more demand for goods coming through Marion than what could be grown thereon. With this new trade opportunity came new industry which included manufacturing products such as cigars and boots but also many other things such as hats, shoes, wagon wheels and cattle feeders. By 1900, however, most everyone had left for better opportunities elsewhere because railroads had come along which made transportation much easier to get goods to customers than having to bring them all the way downstate either by wagon or horseback! Today’s economy is based mainly on health care services which are provided by several hospitals within walking distance from the town center including Good Samaritan Hospital (the only hospital within 10 miles) and Monmouth Medical Center (the only hospital with admitting privileges outside Chicago). Other businesses include two grocery stores along with several convenience stores which serve residents both inside and outside the town limits! Shopping centers have also been developed nearby including One Stop Shopping at I-465/State Road 47 south which includes an additional dozen restaurants plus three movie theaters; Walmart Supercenter at CR 167 north; “The Works” development off SR 46 east; see www .marioncounty .org for more information about these businesses! One thing you will NOTICE about Marion is that no matter how often they change their name - they keep their friendly mannerisms! When you walk into any store or restaurant here - whether it be A&P or JCPenney - everyone greets you warmly by name even if they don’t know you well! They have even done something similar back home in France where they refer to themselves as les gens de la rue - "the people on the street!"

Marion, Indiana is an industrial town located in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Indiana. It was founded in 1814 by a group of settlers from Connecticut under the name of New London. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century and became a major manufacturing center for products such as textiles, watches, shoes, and firearms. In 1914, Marion became part of the newly created United States state of Indiana and has since been its most populous city. The history of Marion begins with its founding in 1814 as a small community near present-day Noblesville. At that time, it was one of many Native American villages located along the banks of the White River. When white settlers arrived in what is now Marion County in 1817, they found numerous abandoned villages throughout central Indiana; these were soon occupied by colonists seeking to establish new settlements on land rich with natural resources. One early settler, Solomon Morse (1802-1870), erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1819 and named it New London after his home colony in Connecticut. In 1825, John Crain (1796-1868) organized two bands of Indians called The Six Nations to resist land purchases by British settlers at Fort Dearborn; this action helped precipitate Indian Removal Act (1833). As result, about 40% of all Native Americans living within modern-day Indiana were forced southward into Oklahoma Territory or westward into Canada between 1830 and 1840 pursuant to proscriptions contained in the Indian Removal Act. By 1860, only 2% remained within present-day Marion County; however, their numbers had grown considerably due to recent waves of immigration from Europe and Asia who came for agricultural purposes rather than for removal southward. In 1814/15 some local residents formed a company to purchase 640 acres (2 km2) northeast of New London from Nathan Hale & Associates for $5 per acre ($160 total). This initial parcel comprised today’s downtown area including parts of Main Avenue (now State Road 524), Vine Street (now Delaware Avenue), Seventh Street NW (), Elmira Place (), and Park Row (). The site was initially used as an open field until fallow season when he harvested corn fields using teams pulled by oxen or horses on large plows similar to those still used today across much rural America during that era; this method allowed him plentyof food while making good profits thanks to falling prices for goods imported from England via boatloads upon arrival at Indianapolis dockside marketplaces before being sold off piecemeal through local farmersgate markets throughout Midwest America beginning around 1800.). On November 15th,, 1794 "Marion Township", which included parts now constituting downtown Indianapolis proper,[1] was organized as one township with four voting precincts[2]arcaded east–west following Market Streets I–IV north latitude wise (& pioneer routes leading thereto)[3][4]. On January 1st,, 1800 "New London Township", also including parts now constituting downtown Indianapolis proper,[1], was organized with twelve voting precincts[5],arcaded east–west following Market Streets WEST ′+′ NORTHWESTLY,[6][7]north latitude wise (& pioneer routes leading thereto)[8][9]; both townships were divided into seventeen blocks[10]) each consisting ½ mile square…..(See map attached).[11] At first only men voted here but later women did too….ByMarch 3rd., 1861 Little Rock Township [12] had joined New London[13]; both townships continued being divided into Blocks but renamed Marion Township North & Harrison Township South after General George Harned's brigade OF THE 7th Wisconsin INFANTRY arrived here May 15th 1861…..Marion Twp., Harrison Twp., Little Rock Twp., Noblesville City limits
In 1871, the Indiana General Assembly passed a bill that established Marion as an incorporated town. The first mayor was elected in 1872. The town had a population of 11 people when it became an incorporated town.
