Grant who had served as a Major General during that battle, it became more specific when it was organized as Marion County on November 3rd 1855 under territorial governor William Buell from Knox County (later Butler County) near Cincinnati Illinois Territory then under Confederate rule until Union occupation on April 14th 1865 followed by Reconstruction which continued until May 8th 1865 when Congress abolished slavery in America (and most other southern states) resulting in an end to segregation laws within Indian Territory thereby giving voting rights to citizens of both races without regard to race or gender beginning December 15th 1865 local polling days ending January 6th 1870 inclusive also civil registration began January 1st 1870 so residents had name basis for identification rather than slave holders having last names only
