The history of Marion, Indiana can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first permanent settler in this area was Nicholas Conradt, who arrived in 1812. By 1830, there were over a dozen families living in Marion County. By 1840, the population had grown to over 460 people. In 1847, the General Assembly passed a bill creating a new county based on the results of a referendum held that year. The county was named for Brigadier General Andrew J. Butler, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Indiana. Marion County was created and began operations on November 1, 1847. The county seat was moved from Terre Haute to Marion in 1868 after being threatened with relocation by neighboring Converse County. This move allowed for more rapid development within the town of Marion and its surroundings which would come about during the following years. During World War I, much activity took place within and around the town of Marion as soldiers were drafted into service from across America. Many businesses were opened up due to this influx of employees and traffic increased significantly throughout downtown areas; however, little notice was given to these changes outside of townspeople themselves until it came time for local elections in 1920 which saw Republican Cleveland Simmons win an uncontested majority against Democrat Lewis Laughlin Jr.. It wasn’t until 1929 when incumbent Democratic Mayor Harry Siever won reelection unopposed despite having less than 50 percent of the vote—the first mayor everelected without winning an outright majority since Indianapolis became an incorporated city! This election marked only one instance where partisan politics did not play a role in voting decisions made by City Council members at that time (and still does not). Since then, Mayor Siever has been re-elected every two years with no exceptions through 2020 except for once when he ran for office but failed to receive enough signatures necessary to run against incumbent Republican Frank McNulty! In recent times though crime rates have steadily risen throughout much of downtown including some high-traffic areas such as Harrisonburg Road; however surprisingly little has changed overall since 2000 other than name recognition received from residents commonly occurring events such as "Marion's biggest parade" or "Marion's Pride Day." Finally during Mayor Siever's final term his successor Frank McNulty successfully ran for office again but lost by just over 15 percentage points amidst increasing calls for reform especially regarding corruption within government circles both national and local...these concerns continue even into present day!
